Why I Recommend Using A Paint Sprayer On Interior Walls

Paint spraying is for professionals only, isn’t it? It’s too difficult, too technical, too messy, too expensive. Those are some of the most common misconceptions about paint spraying.

Once you know what you’re doing, paint spraying is a lot more efficient than your traditional old roller or brush. No matter how hard you try with a roller or brush, the result never looks professional and you will always miss spots. You invariably end up with a crick in your neck trying to paint ceilings or with paint in your hair. There’s also the hassle constantly having to refill your paint tray, forcing you to go up and down a ladder all day.

Using a paint sprayer allows you to reach those hard-to-reach places, like corners and ceilings, easily. It results in a seamless, even, professional finish. It is a lot faster and more efficient; and it’s a lot less messy.  There are fewer paint spills and none of those pesky stray brush hairs to ruin the effect of your hard work.  Because paint spraying is so quick, you can cut down on labor costs significantly.

Even the clean-up is less daunting. You probably know how difficult it is to clean brushes and rollers thoroughly so you don’t end up ruining your next paint job. My paint brushes always become hard as rocks, no matter how well I think I’ve cleaned them.  With paint sprayers, you need only worry about cleaning the sprayer and the paint container.

Indoor Paint Sprayer Guide: Which Type Is Best For Walls

If you’re going to be painting a large surface area, I would without a doubt go the airless route. With large, flat surfaces, like walls, you don’t need a great deal of control over the spray gun, as you would with more detailed work. An airless system lays down paint exceptionally quickly, about ten times faster than with traditional methods. And you don’t need to thin you paint.

The airless, equipped with an extension rod (30 inches should do it), is also the most efficient way to paint your ceiling.

If you have a bit more experience, I’d try to get the job done with the airless as far as possible. It will mean less down-time and less to clean up. But if you’re unsure, go with your HVLP spray gun for areas that will need more paint control. Here, I’m talking about door and floor trims. Areas where you don’t want your spray gun to run away with you. With an HVLP you can get up much closer to see what you’re doing.

What To Look For In A Good Interior Sprayer

Painters – professionals and DIY-ers – have different ideas about what is important when it comes to good interior sprayer.

I always look for a rugged construction, something that’s going to survive multiple paint jobs. These sprayers don’t come cheap, so you’ll want it to last.  In addition, make sure all the hoses and pipes are abrasion resistant. Your sprayer must be compact, especially when you’re working indoors, where space is limited. You don’t want to be tripping over the motor, especially when you’ve got your eyes on the ceiling.

A good sprayer will enable you to adjust the pressure easily. I also look for a flexible suction tube, so you can spray directly from the paint drum or bucket. It also must have the ability to support a long paint hose, especially if you’re dealing with multiple storeys.

You want to be able to spray a variety of coatings from latex to stains, so you can get the most out of your sprayer. And look out for reversible tips that will allow you to clear clogging on the fly.

As far as clean-up is concerned, the better models can be fitted to your garden hosepipe. That will allow you to flush out the system easily.

Best Brands For Interior Sprayers: Graco, Wagner, or Titan?

Graco

Graco Inc. represents the higher end of the market in terms of paint sprayers. This may be suitable for large or small indoor projects but depends on your budget. They are my favorite as they get the job done quickly, are efficient on paint, and leave a professional finish.

Wagner

This is another leading brand in the paint sprayer space. Their range of sprayers that are suited to interior spraying such as walls, doors and more, comes in cheaper than the Graco range above. I have outlined 3 of their best sprayers for interior jobs.

Titan

A well-known brand or branch of the Wagner company which focuses on quality airless spray machines. Their range and expertise make them a good choice for indoor paint jobs. Like Graco, they can be more costly than other brands but if you want to get the job done right the first time then they are another brand to consider.

Alternative Option

Paint Zoom represents an ulterior option for those who want a very simple to use product. It is not my preference but I can certainly understand why people like it.

This paint spraying machine is ideal for anyone who loves DIY. Lightweight and extremely portable, it is easy to store away when not in use. You can choose from light to medium spray coverage and there is a control knob in which the user can choose the correct pressure setting.

This product is ideal for use on interior and exterior walls, fences, and decking as it excellent at covering large areas. You have to learn how to set up and clean the sprayer but once this is mastered it is easy to use. The DVD guide is a good addition that makes the learning process that much easier!

You can use the paint gun in all directions because of the swivel nozzle. The main benefit is that it is light and easy to hold when taking on your DIY job. It also delivers the paint onto a large surface relatively quickly and gives excellent coverage.

The only thing you need to remember is to cover any items nearby that you do not want painting! In my opinion, this model is the top choice in airless paint sprayers when considering painting your interior walls.

Pros

  • Lightweight but still very durable
  • Great value for money
  • Very easy to use
  • Suitable for a wide range of projects
  • Fully adjustable pressure control

Cons

  • Does not swivel on hose

My Overall Rating

The Titan Control Max is called a High Efficiency airless for a lot of reasons. the Titan decreases overspray by more than 50% compared to other standard airless sprayers. It has a softer spray, which gives you more control over the finish.

These are excellent features for spraying indoors where overspray is always a concern. This Titan model is perfect for coating the whole house as it has excellent paint flow and the capacity to cover large areas easily.

There are a few drawbacks, such as such as the long clean-up and prep times. But these are common to most airless spray systems. This is a genuine rival the Graco airless sprayers and a worth addition to any garage. The reason I have it at #2 is because it is 3 x the weight of the Graco x5 and is made for wheeling around.

This airless unit is ideally suited for the heavy duty, do-it-yourself enthusiast, and professional painter. It gives fantastic coverage on all interior walls and ceilings, exterior furniture, decks, sheds, and fences.

Extremely durable and lightweight, this Graco model is equipped with a fold down handle, allowing for easy movement when spraying. This feature is also an essential aspect in its ease of storage. The flexible hose also allows the user to get to all those tricky places like in the corner of walls.

There is no need to prime before you can start painting with the X7. It can deliver 0.34 gallons of paint per minute and can contain a maximum of 5 gallons of paint.

There is no need to thin paint as you can use directly from the tin which is a big time saver. It is an extremely quick way in which to paint and there is very little overspray.

The paint gun is incredibly easy to use and ideal for the novice who has never used one of these devices before all the way to an industry professional. This is a step up in terms of cost from the Graco x5. It is best for those who want to spray more than just the inside walls of a house.

This nifty all-in-one handheld, electric sprayer, comes with a standard 32oz siphon-fed cup, is great for smaller projects like cabinets, furniture and doors. Compared to a conventional airless, it is so much easier to set up. It is ready to go in a few minutes because it is handheld. Being smaller, you can get into tighter spaces, like shelving and corners easily.

My Overall Rating

This Wagner product has all the basic things that an indoor sprayer has to be. It is one of the best paint sprayers for interior walls because it has a high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) capacity. This particular product uses an original I-Spray system that in effect lets it spray latex paint on interior walls that do not taper off.

The spray nozzle is the key element of this product because it allows you to blow paint onto a surface like it was done by a roller brush, and it does so evenly. Add to that is the smooth front part which when used directly on surfaces results in finer and smoother paint jobs. It contains the Lock on Go type of composition, which the handler clears it easily. Wagner is a trusted brand when it comes to sprayers. You can visit our comprehensive review guide to Wagner products here.

    Well-known brand

My Overall Rating

This product is portrayed as allowing one to paint like professionals and to operate it with ease. With the technology and its composition, one can spray paint any interior wall that allows him to cover every inch. This is the good sprayer for walls that have a flat finish.

Alot of preparation is needed before pointing the nozzle and pressing on the trigger. The viscocity must be correctly calculated and then it will perform with very minimal splatter and spills. It is very light to carry around, especially if you are planning to paint all the walls of your home's interior. Paint Zoom paint sprayer is driven by a power packed motor that generates about 650 w of energy.

Overall I believe there are better options than the Paint Zoom that are easier to use and provide a better finish.

13 Tips And Tricks For Wall Painting

  • Prepare, prepare, prepare. Make sure all your surfaces are clean and dry. I usually wash them down with sugar soap the day before and let them dry overnight.
  • Fill cracks and file down any lumps or bumps.
  • Properly tape up the areas you don’t want painted. Remove plug covers and other fittings.
  • Remove all loose furniture and protect your flooring.
  • If painting ceilings only, make sure your walls and floors are protected from overspray. Also, make sure there is nothing in your pathway, because your attention will be on the ceiling.
  • Clean your spray gun before you start, by running some solvent through the gun.
  • Read the manual. It will give you guidance on whether you should dilute your paint or on which tip size to use.
  • Protect yourself. Always wear a proper respirator mask, goggles and gloves. If painting ceilings, wear a head covering.
  • Test the gun out on a spare piece of cardboard before you start to ensure you’ve set the correct pressure.
  • The trick to paint spraying is not to stop and start. You want a continuous flow of paint. I’d suggest painting vertically, up and down, in one continuous stream.
  • Make sure there is an overlap of about 50%.
  • Once you’re finished painting, remove the masking tape while the paint is still fresh.
  • Clean your equipment thoroughly, immediately after you are finished.

Conclusion

Choosing any of the three paint sprayers when doing a paint job on your interior walls will certainly give you maximum satisfaction as far as the end results are concerned. These three paint sprayers cover all the basic needs that you need to perform a professional looking job

The ease of handling and carrying these sprayers certainly adds to its attractiveness for those, like you, who are about to beautify the indoor walls of their homes. Graco, Paint Zoom and Wagner have been making and manufacturing these types of paint sprayers that are perfect for the exterior and interior of your house.
