Many DIYers are familiar with the Paint Zoom. Unfortunately, the brand is well known but they should spend less money on marketing and more on quality production. This is not a great choice for home use. Let me explain below in this paint zoom reviews, and offer some alternatives paint sprayers for all budgets.
More and more homeowners have started turning to tools and gadgets to save money on their home improvement projects. Tips, tricks, and gadgets are popping up everywhere but it’s important to know what product works best for your needs!
Not only are you seeing more options available but the ones that are sticking around are those ones that not only saved money but have been so easy to use that they have given homeowners a sense of pride and satisfaction.
One of the gadgets that are finding itself more prevalent in home improvement projects of all shapes and sizes is the Paint Zoom Paint Sprayer. I will give you my honest, unbiased assessment and even provide alternatives to the zoom product.
What Job Is It Suitable For Painting?
It is advertised on TV as having many uses. While it’s can be used inside, it can also be used outside for staining fencing and decks. Additionally, it works with flat walls, textured walls, brick, crown moldings, and ceilings. These may be true in some capacity but I feel there are better options from Wagner, Graco, and Homeright that will get the job done more easily.
The one job I would use it on if I still had one is fences if you can close enough to a power source. This is because the easy reach aspects of the paint zoom allow for twisting and turning and reaching those cracks between wooden fence posts.
Negative Aspects Of The Paint Zoom Sprayer
Problems can definitely arise when using this product. The company’s video and instruction manual all mention adding only 10% water for latex paint. The paint must be thinned to meet the flow rate like discussed in the manual.
Also, I believe it is best to continuously add water to the latex paint until the viscosity cup discharges the paint. Neither the company or the paint manufacturer will tell you this as they want to protect themselves. Paint that is thinner will usually require a second coat.
Like most sprayers you will have some residual overspray, so make sure that you are ready to tape off and cover anything that you don’t want to be spotted with paint. This is where the time comes in, making sure that you do a proper tape and over the job is where you will spend all your time. The painting itself is quick and easy when sticking to my tips above.
Paint application with this small sprayer is quick and easy with its one-touch operation. No more hours of back-breaking work with a roller or brush, plug in your sprayer, fill with paint and go. Constructed from an ultra-light material, this sprayer is easy to carry at only five pounds.
Once again, the most important thing to consider when using this sprayer is that you will need to thin your paint out to the appropriate viscosity. This is very easy to do by simply mixing a small amount of water with the paint. Using latex water-based paints are best for this, but oil-based paints are no problem either. Once you have the proper mix down you’ll be refilling your paint container in mere seconds and off to paint the next spot.
Cons From Amazon Users
There are many users who were not happy with the paint zoom and returned the product. There have been more (36%) 1-star reviews on Amazon than 5-star (32%). This is a clear indication that this product can work but for a cheaper spraying system, it does not make it as easy as it should. Here are some examples.
Christine – ‘Did not work very well. Lots of splatter’ – December 2015
BBB – ‘cheap, doesnt paint well, we tried to save money, and ended up throwing money away on this, wasting time. had to buy rollers and do it the old fashion way. paint gets clogged almost immediately. does not spray correctly’ September 2013
Cleanup can be simple when the previous steps are followed. The correct viscosity will not cause problems such as spluttering paint or overspray.
Turn off the motor and press the trigger to allow the paint to drain back into the canister, and then dump the remaining paint out of the canister. Using a little water for latex paint, or mineral spirits for oil-based you’ll be able to quickly remove the paint from the canister. Put some clean water or mineral spirits in the canister and spray. This will quickly clean the hose and spray nozzle of any remaining paint residue.
Why am I suggesting ulterior products?
The Zoom was one of the best products when it was released but technology has advanced and companies have developed more specific sprayers for the DIY handyman or woman. Graco and Wagner are 2 leaders in this industry and their product range is better than the Paint Zoom.
This paint sprayer features a flexible tip that allows you to paint in any direction, making it easy to do touch-ups in hard-to-reach places. Its ProControl feature allows you to adjust the spray pressure so you can paint more effectively on thick or thin materials. The gun is also compatible with a wide range of paints including heavy acrylics but should not be used with any flammable materials.
When you purchase the TrueCoat Plus II you will also get a 515 Reversible Tip, a 32 oz. cup with specially fitted cover, a Pump Armor Storage/Start-Up Tool. It also comes with a How-To Instructional DVD that will teach you how to use it properly for a variety of projects, making it an excellent first paint sprayer.
This model beats the Zoom as it really gets the job done smoother and quicker despite being an electric model. I highly recommend this Graco Truecoat for the serious DIYer.
This is an HVLP sprayer that offers maximum control and 3 different spray patterns. It has a trigger with variable controls and patterns ranging from 1 to 10 inches. The HVLP technology makes it possible to spray thinner materials such as sealers, stains, varnishes, urethanes, and lacquers.
This Wagner Double Duty is better than the Zoom because it is easier to use, has more power and gets the job done every time.
The 2-stage air turbine allows continuous material and air flow for a fine finish for your deck or indoor cabinets. The different positions spray vertical, horizontal and round shapes to get every job done effectively and quickly. You can set it up within 5 minutes and clean up within 10 and this model comes in cheaper than the Zoom. All that combined make this suitable for the beginner DIYer.
The Paint Zoon Paint Sprayer is very affordable at well under $100 for the standard sprayer and around $100.00 for the deluxe sprayer. Included with the standard sprayer is 1 Paint Zoom Paint Sprayer spray gun, air cap ring, spray pattern adjuster with its 3 way dial spray head, nozzle, O-ring, nut paint flow adjuster, gasket, viscosity cup, pick up tube, paint container, hose and motor base.
No matter the time of year, there is always something that needs to be painted in most households. These jobs sit and wait until someone finally gets up and goes out to by paint and brushes, only to spend hour upon hour getting ready to paint and then actually pulling out those brushes and rollers to paint. With the this brand of sprayer, that time is cut into a mere fraction of what it normally would be.
