Beginner’s Guide: What Should I Take Into Consideration
Whether you want to do some home projects or you’re looking to set up your own car painting business, there are some important factors to consider when choosing the best automotive paint sprayer.
Consider what kind of paints you will be applying. Thicker coats, like primer, will require a more powerful and often larger gun with a bigger nozzle. Thinner paints need less pressure to atomize properly and are used with smaller nozzles. Some automotive paint sprayers are more versatile due to their adjustable features, so that you don’t have to worry whether they’re compatible with your material.
Also, consider your budget. It may sound obvious, but if you’re only going to use the gun for a specific project you probably won’t want to spend hundreds of dollars. If you want a gun that will deliver high quality finishes project after project, you will likely want to spend a bit more money on a paint sprayer that is durable and easy to clean and maintain.
Which Type of Paint Gun is Best for Cars?
So what type of automotive paint sprayer is best? Almost every professional will tell you that HVLP (or high volume low pressure) spray guns are the right choice for painting vehicles.
Automotive painting requires specialized paints that are often expensive. You don’t want to throw away money on wasted paint, so a sprayer with a high transfer efficiency (also known as TE) is the right choice.
HVLP spray guns best fit the bill. They are known for minimal overspray and bounce-back. Also, HVLP guns and their parts can usually be easily adjusted and replaced so that waste is minimized without compromising the quality of your finish.
But within the HVLP category, there are still many types of gun. Let’s have a look at what they are and how they might affect your painting.
HVLP guns are usually either gravity feed, meaning the paint cup sits on top of the gun, or siphon feed, meaning the paint canister is attached to the bottom of the gun.
Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Gravity feed guns use less energy, because they do not require air pressure in order to draw fluid. They use every drop of paint, because whatever you put in them will flow into the gun.
The cups on gravity feed guns tend to be made of semi-transparent plastic which makes it easy to see when the paint is running low, and means the gun is lighter and easier to handle.
Siphon feed guns, on the other hand, require air pressure to draw fluid. They are known to be slightly cheaper than gravity feed guns. The paint canisters are usually made of metal, making the gun heavier but also easy to set down. Often, siphon feed paint canisters can hold larger volumes of fluid than gravity feed cups.
The nozzle of the gun is usually the simplest part, as you can place various nozzles on one spray gun. Nozzle sizes generally range from 1.0mm to 2.2mm. The heavier the material you will be spraying, the larger the nozzle needs to be.
So for primers, you’ll be using a nozzle in the 1.8mm range, while thinner materials like single-stage paints, metallic, and pearl finishes are used with nozzles around 1.2mm.
You can usually buy different nozzles for your spray gun separately, but you may find it useful if various nozzles are already included.
Your air compressor needs to be able to keep up with your gun. It needs to consistently produce enough air to maintain the right pressure.
The two specifications that are crucial are CFM (cubic feet per minute) and PSI (pounds per square inch). Paint guns are rated by the number of CFM they require at a certain PSI.
A good rule of thumb is to get an air compressor that produces 1.5 times the CFM that the gun requires at a given pressure.
This reduces the risk of having to stop and wait for your air compressor to restore pressure while your paint begins to dry.
Some HVLP guns come as part of a complete spray system. These already include a motor that produces the air pressure needed for the spray gun. If you don’t already have an air compressor or don’t want to buy one separately, such systems might be preferable.

My Overall Rating
This Fuji spray gun handily combines all the desirable features of a professional spray system with a portable form. This makes it the perfect solution for painting your truck or car as you’ll be able to work without feeling weighed or tethered down. It’s pretty lightweight as well as portable, meaning you can hold and use if for prolonged periods of time without your arms going dead!
The Platinum turbine produces approximately 6psi, meaning you can use it for a range of paint types. If you’re painting a truck, you might be going for a thinned paint or a water-based coating – the good news is that this sprayer can handle both!

Spray Guns Only
4. Devilbiss Finishline 4 FLG-670
My Overall Rating
The Finishline 4 FLG-670, just like the rest of the Finishline 4 series, is known for giving the latest in enhanced atomization technology. That means you’re really getting some top-of-the-range quality with this little machine. It may be a gun on its own but it’s well worth the price of buying an additional compressor.
This gun is probably most famous among the world of spraying painting for its precision machined air cap and fluid nozzles. If that doesn’t mean much to you, this basically means you get an excellent painting finish with it.
This is great if you’re working on finer details in visible places, so your truck or car, for example. It’s still really good for use on larger areas that require less precision, like outdoor walls or fences.
One of the best features is how simple the cleaning process it. The body is anodized, which means cleaning is kept to a minimum and you don’t need to overly stress about rust or damage! This applies to the internal passages of this sprayer, too.
If you’re a seasoned pro, you’ll know that cleaning your spray gun can take a really long time, which is why this feature of the Finishline 4 FLG-670 is nothing but great. That said, we’d still suggest looking after this piece of equipment to ensure it serves you for a long time to come.
This tool is perfect for big jobs (good news if you fancy sprucing up your truck or van!) – it’s really nice and lightweight, coming in at just 1.5 pounds. That means you won’t be straining yourself while you’re working and you won’t have to fight to feel in control.
The Devilbiss is a multitasking tool, coming with 1.3, 1.5 and 1.8mm fluid tips – that means you can use a variety of paint types, which is great if you’re looking for an investment tool that will really last you. You can choose the tip size and go from there – each will offer a slightly different finish based on how they atomize the paint you’re working with. Either way, you’re guaranteed a professional-looking finish!
Devilbiss is a well-respected choice in spray guns and rightly so. Achieving a polished finish when spraying your car or automobile requires a quality gun, which is why this one made the cut. The Finishline offers superb features and will provide the coating you need, whatever job you’re tackling. Just remember it’s a spray gun only so a compressor is required!
5. Tekna 703517 ProLite 1.3mm and 1.4mm Fluid Tip Spray Gun
My Overall Rating
There are a substantial number of paint sprayers on the market today, which makes it pretty hard to find the right model for your project. This quality sprayer is great for a range of jobs, making it a lovely little investment for those who DIY regularly and those who need a good machine for a one-off task, like truck-painting or outdoor work.
The main thing to point out with this machine is its light weight – it weighs just two pounds! That means your arms and back won’t get weary as quickly as they do with some other products on the market. Depending on the challenge you’re taking on, you could be holding the sprayer up for prolonged periods of time. You’ll really start to appreciate this light weight when you’ve been using it for long time at once!
It’s also worth noting that this product is compatible with DeKups disposable cup guns, which is great news if you’re a regular paint sprayer and already have a stash. Thanks to the special adapter on this sprayer, you can make the most of your current cups rather than let them go to waste.
Using the cup guns means that there really is minimal maintenance and clean-up involved – you simply dispose of the cups and can essentially start over! That means you don’t need to buy or use cleaning solutions, either, saving you money and time.
The sprayer includes three air caps – they’ve been created with cutting-edge fluid dynamic technology. If that means nothing to you, it basically means that the paint atoms are sprayed at a superior level, giving you an even coverage and a professional-looking finish.
The Tekna 703517 ProLite Paint Sprayer is near the higher end of the medium price-ranged paint sprayer products currently sold, but it’s completely worth the money if you’re after a quality piece of kit.
On the note of maintenance, you don’t need to worry about wear and tear over time (although we do obviously recommend giving it some love!). There’s a strong, protective coating that covers the external areas of the gun, meaning less damage.
It also covers the internal components, which is fantastic news as they can be near-impossible to clean properly with some other spray guns! This combination safeguards your spray gun against corrosion and keeps it working well for longer.
The Tekna 703517 ProLite Paint Sprayer is definitely a great choice in this product line. It leads the pack when it comes to its ability to be used in any type of climate. The negative aspects of this sprayer primarily relate to the cost, as it leans towards the higher end of its category. That said, the benefits outweigh this as you’ll end up with a great, professional-looking finish on every project you tackle.
6. Graco-Sharpe 288878 HVLP FX3000
My Overall Rating
Graco-Sharpe is one of the most dependable spray gun producers on the market today, and this machine is no exception. In fact, the output of the FX3000 could be said to be on par with high-end paint guns. Coming from a trustworthy brand, this machine had to make it to the list – especially as it performs so well on truck- and car-painting tasks.
The FX3000 is a 1.0 mm HVLP Gravity Feed Spray gun. It’s lightweight and compact, which is fantastic if you’re planning on getting big jobs out of the way. You won’t have to worry about arm-fatigue or strain as you lift the gun, as you do with some bulkier pieces of kit.
This means you can carry on spraying at the same level of quality, whether you’re tackling the fence around your entire garden or need a precise paint-job on your truck or van. It’s the perfect choice for DIYers at home and professional painters alike, thanks to its ease of use and classic finish.
The gun comes with a paint cup lid that you can pull open to monitor your paint level easily. This is especially important if you’re relatively new to paint spraying. Some newbies can get pretty overeager and tend to blast through their paint, going over the same spot several times in a row.
This can be effective in some ways, but you might end up using more paint than you realise! Having a handy, visible level of paint displayed to you while you work will help you keep things in check. You’ll still achieve that lovely-looking finish, too…
This sprayer is great for DIYers as you can choose different sizes as per the projects you’re tackling. This option is slightly cheaper than the Devilbiss option above – that’s not to say it compromises on quality, however! You’re still getting a fantastic product, and from a very trusted brand.
The Graco-Sharpe is certainly capable of re-spraying a car, so makes a great addition to your toolkit. If you’re in the market for a dynamic duo for sprayer, I’d recommend the Devilbiss for regular paint work and the Graco-Sharpe for one-off auto paint jobs.
7. Thunder Hardware 4001J 34 oz Siphon Feed Spray Gun
My Overall Rating
Not everyone has heard of this tool, but it just had to make my list! One of the best aspects of this spray gun is its versatility – you can use it for so many jobs around your home and garden, from outdoor work to painting your truck or automobile. It can handle a range of paint types, so you can happily spray a multitude of products with ease, ideal if you’re a savvy DIYer who’s always finding new products.
You can use a huge range of paints with this tool, from lacquers, stains and contact cements to top coats, primers and, of course, paint without an issue. This spray gun has been designed to be durable and sturdy – it’s got a stainless-steel canister which is built to last. It requires little maintenance thanks to its robust frame and base.
If you’re new to painting with a spray gun, this is the ideal tool for you. You can work at pretty much any angle and it’ll spray evenly. This is fantastic for newbies as you can focus on the job in-hand rather than worrying about how to hold it or how to angle it. If you’re used to spray painting, you’ll love how easy this is easy to use and how responsive it is to your movements as you work.
One of the only downsides is that this is a spray gun on its own. It doesn’t feature its own compressor, so you’ll need to supply the power. Luckily, you can use any compressor with three horsepower and 7-12 CFM – these should work well alongside this sprayer and give it the power it needs to deliver high performance painting.
To end on a high note, the fan size is brilliant! You can choose what size you’d like, actually, with its adjustable settings. From 8 inches away, you can expect a fan of paint up to 11 inches in diameter – not too shabby! This will really come in handy when you start developing confidence and using this gun for different tasks. You’ll want a different setting when you’re spray painting truck and doing more precision work indoors, and you’ll be able to choose as you go.
For the price, you really can’t beat it, especially if you already own an air compressor. You’ll find that your smaller to medium-sized painting projects are cut down to a fraction of the time – perfect for seasoned pros and those new to spray painting alike.
8. Astro PT2-4GH 2-1/4 Gallon Pressure Tank with Spray Gun
My Overall Rating
So, you’re after an easy-to-use spray gun that puts you in total control? With the PT2-4GH (catchy name, right?), you can monitor the spray pressure as you work. This might not sound that important, but it means that you can vary the pressure and finish as you go.
The pressure is in charge of how fine the paint particles come out (it atomizes the paint so determine if it comes out thicker or thinner, essentially), which really affects the finish you’ll be able to achieve. You can check the pressure with a handy gauge and there’s also a fluid pressure regulator – this means the accuracy of the spray setting is achieved every time.
This is a great little feature for people who’ll be using this tool for a variety of tasks around their home and garden. You can choose the finish you get each time, depending on the paint type you’re using and what surface you’re spraying on. Even better? Whatever pressure you choose, you’ll get a professional-looking finish with this spray gun!
Another useful feature of this spray gun? You’ll be able to roam freely with its 12-foot twin set of hoses. That means you can really get to work on those big projects you’ve been putting off! The twin hoses will let you work down the end of your garden, inside the garage or on your driveway with ease – meaning you can easily tackle far distances and hard-to-reach areas of your car or truck as you paint.
The pressure is maintained despite the length of hose the paint comes through, so you don’t need to worry about affecting the finish! This makes this gun an excellent candidate if you are looking for a machine to use in painting large areas such as vans and trucks.
Of course, this is just a spray gun, so you will need to buy a compressor to work alongside it. The benefits of this gun really outweigh the fact that you need to buy an additional piece of kit – you’ll be very pleased with the finish you get!
Spray Gun Kits
9. Campbell Hausfeld CHK005CCAV Spray Gun Kit
My Overall Rating
This HVLP spray gun kit is ideal for automotive, furniture, and equipment painting as well as a variety of other home projects. HVLP refers to the way that the paint (or other material!) comes out of the spray gun. In this case, it stands for ‘High Volume; Low Pressure’ – that means a lot of paint comes out very quickly at a low pressure.
This makes it fantastic for larger jobs where you want a lot of even coverage in one go. It does mean that this kit isn’t the best one for smaller, precision paint-jobs, however – it still does a good job, it’s just better-suited to bigger tasks.s
That said, you’ll have everything you need for larger jobs, like spray painting your truck or car! This 34-piece kit is the right choice for you if you like knowing that everything is included. This is a great little standalone kit that doesn’t require any additional tools. The set-up is surprisingly simple, too – 34 pieces aren’t as many as they sound, don’t worry!
One of my favorite features? You’ll actually get two different-sized spray guns in the one kit! This is wonderful news for regular DIYers who want one kit than can do everything. Each gun comes with gravity feed cups – that means you can get to work, thoroughly painting a huge range of surfaces.
The larger of the two guns comes with a 550ml, making it ideal for jobs like painting your automobile. For smaller jobs, use the gun with the 120ml cup and crack on. I love how adaptive this kit is, as you don’t need to lug around paint than you’re going to use for each job. Both guns require 2.1CFM and 0.7CFM respectively at 40psi. You can then adjust the airflow to optimize atomization and apply an excellent finish, whatever job you’re working on.
The kit comes in a portable storage case, perfect if you’re prone to losing smaller bits of machinery. All in all, your kit includes the two aforementioned gravity-feed spray guns, along with air-adjusting valves with gauges that help you monitor your work.
You’ll also get a cleaning kit, which is relatively simple to use – low-maintenance cleaning is always a good thing! On top of that, you’ll get in-line and regular paint filters to prevent any clumping or disturbances while you work, as well as a metal file, PTFE thread tape to keep things nice and neat, a coupler and a wrench for those little jobs along the way.
With such a complete kit you can get started on your projects right away.
10. TCP Global Brand HVLP Spray Gun Set
My Overall Rating
Speaking of complete, this TCP HVLP gun set comes with a stainless-steel needle and nozzle set. That means that cleaning is kept to a minimum (thank goodness!) and you don’t need to worry as much about rust or erosion as with some other models. This is another HVLP gun, giving you great coverage with low effort, making it ideal for big projects.
This is a great choice for those tackling bigger jobs, like spray painting automobiles. You’ll be in control of how you work, with a fully-adjustable spray pattern. That means you can really alter the way you paint as you go between projects, choosing the pattern from trucks and cars to finer detailing work.
There’s also fluid and air pressure control, so you really get to determine the finish you’ll be achieving. Its operating pressure consists of 29-50 psi, making it a good choice for more extravagant painting tasks.
If you’re new to paint spraying, or you’re just in the market for a newer model or more all-inclusive kit, we’d recommend reading the instruction manual. It’s nice and straightforward, but it’ll really help you make the most of the fantastic features of this little kit.
You’ll get to enjoy a one-year warranty, too – this is always reassuring with new products, especially techy ones that need a bit more attention every so often! That said, TCP Global is a very trusted brand in the auto industry, so you can expect a high quality product. The price doesn’t make it unattainable, however, despite the level of machinery you’re getting with this tool.
The best thing? Its versatility. I love that these kits offer so much more than just one feature. You’ll be able to use this machine with all types of auto painting jobs, as well as different products for those touch-up jobs. You can even use it with primer and topcoats for the more serious jobs, like spray painting your car or truck. You’ll quickly get the hang of this kit and be totally hooked!
11. Fuji Spray 5175G-T75G Gravity Spray Gun
My Overall Rating
The Fuji Spray 5175G-T75G Gravity Spray Gun is a HVLP (high volume, low pressure), turbine-powered paint sprayer that is designed for small residential-type jobs. It is just under 2 lbs., and it has an easy-to-grip handle made of material that tends to stay cool to the touch; these features make it suitable for non-professional and professional painters alike.
It has several improvements over previous Fuji products: the pre-installed air-cap makes it less prone to paint leaks and unintended spray directions; the pattern control knob makes it easier to shift from one spray pattern size to another (it can adjust over a “small” to “medium” size range); the 100% stainless steel parts make it easier to clean and maintain.
The paint ejects from the gun with a pressure of 9.5 psi. At this pressure, the gun is ideal for any paintable household surface, such as wood or metal furniture, and it is highly effective on motor vehicles, as well. It works well with a variety of paint types and can be used to apply lacquer.
As a painter, the automotive spray paint gun is your most important tool to get that car painting project done. To get the best spray paint gun, you need to not only look at famous brands and customer reviews. You also need to listen to yourself as well.
Do you find the piece particularly handy?
Do you find it to your liking and would it accomplish what you intend with it?
Lastly, do not base your decision on the price of the piece. Price tags do not always translate to quality. The bottom line is that you are able to perform what you intend with it and you are satisfied.
