Latex paint can be challenging to work with. Using a paint spray gun deisigned for latex will help achieve a quality finish to your paint project.

Painting a wall is a tedious task, especially when using a roller or brush. Conventional painting is challenging because it puts a strain on the arms and back, and it is difficult to get the coats of paint even on walls.

In this article I have discussed the details around using latex paint and offered some unbiased views on the best products to use when spraying.

What Exactly is Latex Paint?

First of all there is no actual latex in the paint as this is general term that describes some of its components. Instead, this type of paint is made up of synthetic polymers that work as binders. Some of the better-known binders include acrylic, vinyl acrylic or PVA, and styrene acrylic.

The term ‘latex’ is thrown around all too often with many products being labelled this way despite varying amounts of binders in their formula.

Both natural latex and synthetic polymers share similar characteristics of being clear and flexible when dry, and looking milky when wet. This helped to form the blanket term of ‘latex paint’ within the US paint industry.

Benefits of Using A Quality Latex Paint Sprayer

Like acrylic, latex paint is thick and requires special sprayers, tips, and nozzles to apply correctly. While most sprayers claim to be able to use any paint, when it comes to latex, it is more hit or miss.

A quality latex paint sprayer will have the horsepower, pressure ratings, and spray tips to accommodate the thicker liquid. While we don’t recommend that you buy a different sprayer for every type of paint, it is beneficial to use a high-quality latex sprayer when that is the medium of choice.

The good news is that when you buy a high-quality latex sprayer, it will also handle most other types of paint just as well. While you may spend more money on a latex sprayer, the cost to value benefit is increased. Especially when you consider you won’t have to dilute the latex paint.

Considerations When Buying A Latex Paint Sprayer

As with any other purchase, there is generally more than meets the eye. Other factors that make or break a purchase are seldom thought about, especially if we are impatient and want to make our purchase soon. Here are a few things to think about before you by.

Adjustable Settings

Every sprayer handles paint slightly differently, and each paint requires a different pressure or flow rate. Ensuring that your paint sprayer can manage various settings is important. Thicker paints, like latex, require more power and bigger tips. As long as your sprayer is adjustable in terms of pressure, flow rate, and suction, you won’t have a problem.

Let’s face it; unless you have a tiny project to paint, you will be moving around quite a bit. Moving ladders, drop cloths, and other materials are going to be a hassle you must deal with. Your sprayer shouldn’t be one of them. Lightweight sprayers make it simple to move from one spot to another. Heavier models may come with a cart or wheeled housing.

The last thing you want to do while painting a large wall or fence is to stop and refill the paint cup. Unfortunately, unless your model can pull paint directly from the bucket, this is a needed pause in the action.

You can minimize this stoppage, though, by making sure the sprayer you choose has a large paint cup or at least has the option to use larger cups if needed.

Power Rating

Most sprayers are rated on their horsepower. The HP of the sprayer will determine which types of paints are best suited for use. While you probably won’t be able to dial down the power, having a higher-rated sprayer will ensure your latex paint is applied thick and even on all surfaces.

Many spray paint systems come with everything you need to start a single project. However, your particular project might vary from the expected norm. You should double-check that your system can use after-market accessories. Extension wands, for example, can eliminate the need for a ladder.

Longer hoses will keep you from having to move the sprayer around as often, and having a variety of spray tips at your disposal means you spend less time swapping items for different types of paint.

Along with your budget, the warranty is something to look into. Most of the sprayers on the market worth your money will come with a warranty.

The industry average is 12 months. However, the requirements and what the warranty covers will vary. Ensure you know what is required on your end to make a claim before you buy it.

10 Best Latex Paint Sprayers Reviewed

These are the top 10 spray guns for latex paint. I have included a wide range of products for all projects and budgets so you can make an informed choice on your next sprayer.

1. Graco Magnum 262800 X5 Stand

Graco Magnum 262800 X5 Stand Airless Paint...
  • CONTROL PAINT FLOW: Fully adjustable pressure...
  • SPRAY PAINT UNTHINNED: Stainless Steel Piston...

This paint spraying machine is ideal for the homeowner who loves DIY projects. It is lightweight, extremely portable. The control knob allows you to choose from light to medium spray coverage by correcting a pressure setting.

I think this is a great feature because it just gives so much more control over the flow to cater to different kinds of paint projects from delicate to hardy. This is an ideal paint sprayer for spraying latex paint.

The Graco x5 is ideal for use on interior and exterior walls, fences, and decking. It is particularly useful when you need to cover large areas. It works very well with heavy latex and acrylics. A really cool feature is that you can spray paint which hasn’t been thinned.

Yip, thick, unthinned paint is no match for the stainless steel piston pump. I think this is awesome because it means you don’t have to waste time with paint thinner if you don’t want to or need to. Anything to make the job quicker and easier is a plus for me, I’m sure you’d agree!

The DVD user guide makes the learning process of how to set up and clean the sprayer easier. Once this is mastered it is easy to use. Speaking of cleaning, the PowerFlush Adapter can be connected to your garden hose so you can flush the system out before storing it. An easy clean-up is important not only for convenience but for keeping the unit clean and functional while it’s in storage.

You can use the paint gun in any direction as it has a swivel nozzle and the main benefit is that it is light and easy to hold. It also delivers the paint onto a large surface relatively quickly and gives excellent coverage.

I love how it’s been designed to spray directly from the paint bucket, (from 1 to 5 gallons). This makes things a lot simpler as you don’t need to muck around with pouring paint from the bucket to a spray canister. It’s also great because it allows steady paint flow so you can get large surfaces painted quickly.

You can use this handy paint sprayer for indoor and outdoor jobs by controlling the pressure (low pressure for indoors generally). The 75-ft hose allowance is awesome for outdoor jobs as it gives you a long reach for large surfaces. Great for DIY home jobs for anyone to master with a little practise.

The only thing you need to remember is to cover any items nearby that you do not want painting! In my opinion, this one here is the best airless paint sprayer for all surfaces and all types of coating!

Graco Magnum 262805 X7 Cart Airless Paint...
  • CONTROL PAINT FLOW: Fully adjustable pressure...
  • SPRAY PAINT UNTHINNED: Stainless Steel Piston...

This airless unit is ideally suited for the heavy duty do-it-yourself enthusiast and professional painter. It gives fantastic coverage on all interior walls and ceilings, exterior furniture, decks, sheds, and fences.

The pressure is totally controllable by you, so you can adjust it to suit the size of the job at hand. I love this feature because it means you can neatly cater to small jobs with gentle pressure, and blast big jobs with high pressure all with one machine. It handles heavy latex paint with complete ease.

For sake of comparison, this unit (the X7) is a step up from the unit above (the X5) in terms of motor, tip size, hose length and gallons per minute. It’s also 10 pounds heavier than the X5.

The machine is both durable and lightweight. It is equipped with a fold down handle allowing the user easy movement when spraying and also easy storage. The flexible hose helps the user to get to all those tricky places.

The spray tip has been designed to unclog blockages with Reverse-A-Clean technology. This means you can clear out gummy build-up with a simple twisting action (no need to get out a nail and try to pry the blockage out!).

The x7 is easy to assemble and clean and there is no need to prime before you can start painting. It can deliver 0.34 gallons of paint per minute and can contain a maximum of 5 gallons of paint. There is no need to thin paint as you can use directly from the tin. It is an extremely quick way in which to paint and there is very little overspray.

When it comes to clean-up, the Power Flush Adapter connects to your garden hose so you can give the system a thorough flush out. Considering how crucial it is to store a clean paint gun system for longevity and effectiveness, the added cleaning adapter is a very handy feature.

The paint gun is incredibly easy to use and ideal for the novice who has never used one of these devices before all the way to an industry professional. It handles a wide variety of coatings from stains to heavy latex and acrylics.

(Excludes solvent-based lacquer, block filler, asphalt and texture-filled materials) This is the best airless model for spraying latex paint that homeowners would need.

  • HOW IS IT DIFFERENT: This ControlMax sprayer...
  • VARIABLE SPEED PUMP : Has a 0.60 horsepower...

This high-efficiency airless paint sprayer is fit for users who want to the get their paint job done in a short period of time but with high accuracy and quality. This sprayer makes your paint job look like it’s done by a professional. It’s especially suited to be used indoors for ceilings, walls and trims.

If you’re a homeowner with a penchant for accurate DIY, (either a beginner or pro), this could be great for you. This paint sprayer handles latex paints like a champ.

It uses a new tip that decreases the overspray by up to 55% compared to other similar paint sprayers. I love this feature because less overspray means less mess to worry about and decreased margin for error (i.e. get the paint where you want it).

This paint sprayer is designed to give a softer spray which improves control and provides a consistent finish on any surface. This is great for more novice painters who aren’t quite equipped to deal with a high-pressure, power-blast paint sprayer.

The Sureflo Pusher Valve is a clever feature which lets you unstick a stuck ball valve with the push of a button. Other paint sprayer require a hammer and some elbow grease and wasted time to do this.

It can spray un-thinned coatings with an easy-to-replace fluid section that maximizes sprayer life and backed by the best and longest two-year warranty. It has a durable pump that lasts up to 3x competitive sprayers. This is a welcome feature because a failing, stuck or stiff pump is frustrating and sets a project back.

It has a flow rate of .33 GPM and can accommodate up to a .017 inch tip. The unit comes with a 515 ControlMax tip and tip guard and an 80 foot hose.

Wagner Spraytech 0518080 Control Spray Max...
  • HVLP PAINT SPRAYER: The Control Spray Max...
  • ADJUSTABLE SETTINGS: Customize your paint...
  • GREAT DESIGN: The stationary base is...

This is a great paint sprayer for DIY home jobs for people who have a variety of projects to finish. This is because it’s compatible with primers, thinners, lacquers, stains and latex paints. Anyone from beginner to expert can use this sprayer.

I would recommend this for smaller, more precise jobs such as furniture, cabinets and edgings because of the smooth result and gentle pressure. It’s not the best for super large surface areas as the paint vessel cups are smaller compared to the straight-to-the-bucket ability of other models (i.e. the Graco models above). If you’re after a paint sprayer for latex paints, this is a great candidate.

I love how the spray has been designed to be low-pressure but high volume. The paint is atomized into tiny particles which gives that smooth, even finish. The high volume ramps up the speed each job takes, making for an efficient tool indeed.

This HVLP sprayer offers a powerful turbine that sprays both latex and thinner materials (including stains and lacquers). Air pressure can be adjusted using the Variable Air Pressure Control, preventing over spraying. You can conveniently use it even for extended reach through its 20-foot flex air hose.

It offers three different spray patterns (round, horizontal and vertical), so you can choose the best one for your paint job. It also has an adjustable pressure control dial so you can go soft or hard depending on the size of the job.

It comes with two cups, one is a 1-quart metal while the other is a 1 and ½-cup quart plastic cup, making it suitable for a medium-to-large painting job. This sprayer is light but powerful, and it sets up in a few minutes. With its 2 air filters, dust is prevented from damaging the finish.

  • Has 3 different spray patterns
  • Long 20-foot flexible hose
  • Relatively inexpensive, great value
  • Easy clean up

  • May not be suitable for indoors because of some over spraying
  • Can leave a splatter finish

Graco Ultra Corded Airless Handheld Paint...
  • Fastest Way to Finish Small Jobs - Proven by...
  • Perfect Airless Finish at Any Speed - Without...
  • Triax Triple Piston Pump with ProConnect
  • Fully Repairable for Extended Life

This handheld, electric sprayer is ideal for 4-8 quart projects like smaller walls, ceilings, doors, shutters, garage doors, furniture, railings and decks. It’s ideal for people who have small jobs to tackle quickly, but with accuracy.

It’s not for large surface areas (i.e. whole homes or super vast walls and ceiling jobs) as the handheld construction, smaller cup and short cord are not designed for hefty jobs. As for latex? It’s completely compatible with latex paints.

It requires no thinning and has a Tilt-N-Spray pendulum suction tube that provides a full motion of spraying from up, down or sideways without losing prime. The start-up is fast and easy as it’s been designed to get started without blockages or stuck valves to deal with.

It is fully repairable which will extend the life of your sprayer and sprays a wide variety of coatings from stains to heavy latex and acrylics. This allows you to deliver a professional finish to any paint job.

The control is in your hands, as there’s a pressure control system to customize your job. The pressure is from 500-2000 so you can work between delicate, precise jobs to more demanding jobs with ease. The motor speed is also in your hands as you can adjust it from fast to slow to cater to the job at hand.

I love the control features on this machine as it lowers risk of error and allows for perfect results without extra clean-up or fix-ups. If you need to replace the pump there and then, it’s easy to do thanks to the ProConnect replacement system which requires nothing but a Phillips screwdriver and a couple of minutes.

You can use a range of RAC LP tips to customize the job. Plus they can be used on all Graco paint sprayers so you and mix and match if you have a couple of units.

It includes 515 TrueCoat reversible tip, 32 oz. cup with cover, 5 liners, pump armor storage /start-up tool, instructional DVD and storage case. This covers everything and anything. It can make painting faster and more efficient as well as making clean-up easy. This is a complete, fully-assembled package which is ready to use.

  • 3 BRASS SPRAY TIPS: Brass spray tips offer...

The previous version of this paint sprayer (Homeright max fine finish sprayer) was an Amazon bestseller and this newer version is packed with features. A great purchase for home DIY-ers at around $100.

A super affordable paint sprayer for DIY homeowners with various paint jobs to get done quickly and easily. Great for all genders and ages as it’s lightweight and easy to wield. You can absolutely use latex paint with this sprayer if you use a tip with a width of at least 2mm.

Because of the high power (450 watts) it can handle reasonably thick paint which means you don’t have to use as much thinner. This cuts down on time and reduces the hassle of mixing and pouring.

This HVLP, variable flow sprayer features three different spraying patterns, namely vertical, horizontal and circular.

The 39-ounce container is another quality addition to this updated model. 39-ounces is a pretty decent capacity, allowing you to paint a pretty large surface before having to refill, with saves time ultimately.

It sprays paints and stains, using HVLP technology for an even and fine finish. Low pressure prevents over spraying that reduces preparation and cleanup time. It is self-contained, requiring no pump, no hose, and no air compressor.

It comes with 3 interchangeable tips - 1.5, 2.0, and 4.0 mm. But there are 3 other tips available which are compatible with this model if you need a wider variety of finishes. The product itself is made of a high-quality plastic for durability.

You will find it very convenient to use because of its lightweight and ergonomic design, great for homeowners of any expertise level and strength. Use it to apply enamel, clear sealers, primer, polyurethane or varnish.

The kit comes with a viscosity cup that lets you dilute material for the best spray results. This is my recommended choice as the best HVLP spray gun for woodworking.

  • STORAGE CASE: Durable storage case protects...
  • SPRAY PAINT UNTHINNED: Stainless Steel Piston...
  • SPRAY IN ANY DIRECTION: VacuValve technology...

There aren’t many paint sprayers that perform like a Graco. Because of this, you can expect to pay a premium price, but they are worth every penny. I recommend this for people with small, DIY home jobs and a larger budget to spend.

I don’t recommend it for people who have regular, large painting jobs as it has a low annual use allowance. (For large, regular painting jobs I would go for another Graco model for this, such as the first two reviewed on this list). You can spray latex paint super easily with this handheld machine.

First of all, this sprayer has a variable speed control to determine your pace over the project. This is always a real highlight in my opinion, as it’s far easier to get the result you want (and the accuracy) when you can customize the rate the paint is blasting from the unit.

With the stainless steel piston pump, you can spray unthinned materials with ease thanks to high pressure and durability. In addition, the VacuValve technology allows you to spray in any direction, even upside down. The FlexLiner bag replaces cups, so you can reuse or recycle them when the job is over.

I love the durable storage case included, as it protects the sprayer and accessories while it’s not in use. This makes it easy to tuck away in the garage or work shed without creating extra clutter and mess.

The reversible spray tip allows you to unclog the system if you face a clog. This is great to see, as I hate having to manually dig around at a clog in the middle of a job.

This unit comes complete with two reversible spray tips (4 inch narrow and 12 inch wide), four FlexLiner bags, a manual and storage case. This isn’t for ongoing, professional use as it only has an annual use recommendation of up to 25 gallons per year.

Great for small, occasional jobs around the home or small work projects.

  • Includes siphon gun, tube, 16-ounce Mason...

When you first take a look at this paint sprayer, you might think it looks a little underwhelming, but it’s actually really great. It’s simple but effective and works well without fuss or bulk.

This is one of the best-selling paint sprayers because of its simple design, making it easy to use for beginners and serious woodworkers. Not for heavy-duty, large-surface or professional jobs, this is best suited to DIY home owners and hobbyists with small jobs to complete.

As for latex? Yup, it handles latex paint well.

This compressor-mounted gun attaches to mason jars, (one of which is included in the kit to get you started). It features two adjustments, the height of the liquid nozzle and the air supply regulator. I love that it offers pressure control so you can get a pretty tidy result with minimal overspray.

It’s easy to clean too, as one review said, just connect the sprayer to a mason jar of turpentine and spray until the system is clear.

The 16-ounce jar can be filled with latex paints, lacquers, stains and other materials. The compressor is not included, but the gun can adapt to other sizes of jars.

I really like that when you have finished the job, all you need to do is screw the lid onto the jars to save and store the leftover paints, thinners and stains. It also means you can store lots of different colors and use them easily while working on your paint project.

You will need a ¾ horsepower tankless compressor to power the Siphon Gun. Your compressor must run at 3 CFM at 90 PSI in order to work. This nifty paint sprayer is recommendable for small to medium paint projects, spraying half to two and a half inch circular pattern.

  • Easy to use
  • Great for beginners
  • Cheap
  • Suitable for latex paints, lacquers, stains

  • Needs a compressor
  • Only suitable for small job

9. Astro 4008 Spray Gun with Cup

Astro Pneumatic Tool 4008 Spray Gun with Cup...
  • All-purpose easy-to-clean paint spray gun
  • Two-piece construction with gun featuring...
  • Fully adjustable wide fan pattern control
  • 1 quart capacity dripless cup

This is not your typical spray gun. This is an all-purpose, easy-to-clean paint spray gun featuring exclusive air valve design. It has a fully adjustable wide fan pattern control with 1 quart capacity dripless cup. The fan has a maximum width of 11-inches which is awesome for getting the job done quickly, covering surface areas easily without too much back and forth.

This spray is effective, from primers to top coats, acrylics to contact cement, and car doors to picket fences. Do be aware that it’s best suited to thin paints and doesn’t do so well with thick or unthinned paints. In saying that, you can use latex paints with this gun as long as you thin them down sufficiently.

It caters to almost every surface known. It has a wide range of use which includes body, wood working, production and cabinet shops as well as industrial and marine. It minimizes waste so it can save you money. It can also increases your productivity because of its user-friendly, efficient features.

It has been designed to be totally spill-proof, no matter what angle you turn it. I love this as it means you can get into nooks and crannies without having to worry about creating leaks or spills.

I love the ergonomically-designed spray handle as it means you can work for longer with more comfort and less risk of hand strain and fatigue.

It has a nozzle size of 1.8mm, an operation pressure of 50-60psi, average air consumption of 7 to12cfm, air inlet thread NPT of1/4 inch, siphon feed primer, net weight of 3 pounds or 1.36kilograms and 1 year warranty on material and workmanship. You will need a 7-12 CFM / 3HP compressor for this spray gun.

  • Can adjust the width/height and the amount of paint
  • Runs well on any surface
  • Increased productivity
  • With 1 year warranty
  • Great touch on ceiling even under critical lighting

  • Air pressure bolt may get loose so there would be frequent adjustment on this
  • Doesn’t last long on materials with high solvents thinner being used

  • MULTI-PURPOSE. From primers to tops coats,...
  • FLEXIBILITY. Hold gun at any angle with...
  • DUABILITY. The stainless steel fluid nozzle...
  • HIGH PERFORMANCE. Adjust up to an 11" fan...

One of the best parts of this spray gun is how versatile it is. You can spray a multitude of products with ease. You can apply lacquers, stains, contact cement, top coats, primers and paint without an issue.

Do be aware that it’s not recommended for latex paint, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for that (try a Graco model for this, or even the Astro 4008 above). It’s built to be durable and sturdy thanks to the stainless steel canister at a decent 34 ounces.

This isn’t a spray gun for large jobs, it’s best for small-medium DIY jobs or small work projects. It’s reasonably light so would be suitable for all genders and ages.

You’ll love that you can hold this gun at any angle and the spray will still come out properly. I think this is a great feature as it means you can paint curved or round surfaces easily, without spilling paint as the spray gun moves with the curves of the surface.

This spray gun doesn’t feature its own compressor, so you will need to supply the power. Any compressor with three horsepower and 7-12 CFM should work well.

The adjustable fan size is convenient as well. In fact, at eight inches away, you can expect a fan of up to 11 inches in diameter; not too shabby! For the price, you really can’t beat it, especially if you already own an air compressor.

You’ll find that your smaller to medium-sized painting projects are cut down to a fraction of the time.

  • Versatile
  • Durable stainless steel canister
  • Hold the gun at any angle while spraying
  • Adjustable fan size
  • Low cost

  • You need an air compressor
  • Not designed for larger projects

HVLP Vs. Airless: Which Is Best For Latex?

Best Latex Paint Sprayers

Working with latex can be difficult and trying to determine which sprayer is best for this job can be a tough ask.

In general terms, an airless sprayer gives the highest quality results. Airless paint sprayers provide the solution to latex spraying problems.

With their high horsepower and varied nozzle, sprayers can cover as much area in the shortest possible time.

Masking imperfections such as bumps and cracks are easily done because of sprayers’ finer and thicker application. These are the also HVLP paint sprayer and aforementioned airless paint sprayer.

The HVLP or High-Volume Low-Pressure sprayer offers better control and lower chances of overspray. On the other hand, airless paint sprayers offer dense spraying and more controlled diameter.

My personal preference is to use airless models if I am using latex products. Many airless sprayers allow you take the paint straight from the paint can so work can begin quickly and easily while HVLP will often require thinning before painting can be done.

If you are looking for the best latex paint sprayer to buy for a painting project and are unsure of going for an airless or HVLP model, the reviews below will cover both options.

Uses for ‘Latex Paint’

Interior Walls

A wide range of finishes means that there is plenty of flexibility when considering what to use to paint indoors.

It can be used for the entire surface of the walls and ceilings, or to be added on top of existing paintwork or wallpaper.

Woman painting interior wall with wagner paint sprayer

The range of materials that items of furniture can be made from means that latex paint is an ideal choice.

Whether the furniture is made from wood, iron or plastic, using acrylic paint is the perfect way to alter the color and protect its surface.

Woman painting furniture outside with bosch sprayer

This type of paint is a good option for the external surface of front doors and patio doors.

Changes in temperature will not have an affect the paint and small amounts of water will not be harmful either.

Woman painting door frame with earlex paint sprayer

Concrete, stucco, and bricks are all external surfaces that can be painted with acrylic latex paint. Its resistance to peeling, cracking and flaking will keep external surfaces looking fantastic.

Even with the sun, rain, and wind battering the outside walls, latex will hold strong. The color is also long-lasting so do not quickly fade.

Getting The Best Out Of Your Latex Paint Sprayer

  • Using a Wand can make all the difference when painting high ceilings or exterior walls. They will extend the reach of any spray gun making it easier to cover all areas.
  • Prime the sprayer before use.
  • Tip Size matters an enormous amount.
  • Test the sprayer before beginning on your project. This may seem simple but is always recommended.
  • Read manufacturers instructions before use.

Latex Paint Sprayer Safety Precautions

As with any sprayer, you need to worry about electricity, static electric build-up, and your environment. Along with personal protective gear, you will need a respirator for the fumes and set of goggles to protect from overspray.

If you are painting indoors, ensure you have enough ventilation and that any halogen lights aren’t too close to the fumes or cleaning products. Always check your outlets and plugs to ensure everything is seated properly.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

How do you Thin Latex Paint?

How to clean dried latex from a paint sprayer?

Unfortunately, there will be times when someone forgets to clean the gun, and the latex paint cures inside. There isn’t a quick and easy solution to fixing this, but it can be done.

The first step is to assess the damage, remove all parts that are contaminated, and replace those that need to be replaced. This will include hoses, o-rings, and seals, which are cheaper and easier to replace than to unclog.

Disassemble the gun as much as possible and soak the removed parts in water. You can also use acetone (nail polish remover) but should avoid mineral spirits. Use water-soaked rags to clean and scrape off as much of the paint form the rest of the gun as possible.

Once you have the problem in hand, reassemble the gun and run warm water through the gun to make sure everything is working properly.
