Why I Recommend Using a Paint Sprayer on Cabinets

Woman painting furniture outside with bosch sprayer

Paintbrushes and rollers have their place in everyone's DIY tool-kit, but sometimes you need a little something extra.

When it comes to painting cabinets, rollers are obviously not the best option due to the angles and awkward to reach areas.

Paintbrushes can be a good choice as they allow you to get into small areas. That said, using a paintbrush can take a long time.

There is always a risk of getting paintbrush bristles left in your paintwork. This will massively affect the end result and will not give a professional-looking finish.

Paint sprayers are a fantastic option when painting a cabinet or any other kind of furniture. They will provide a nice, even coverage with no brush-strokes visible. Furthermore, paint sprayers make the most of your paint.

While you may use more paint the necessary when using a paintbrush, the sprayer will not need reloading as often and prevents overspray or wastage. They also get the job done more quickly – happy days.

HVLP Vs Airless: What Is Best For Cabinets?

best paint sprayer for furniture

If you're feeling lost already, let me break it down for you. HVLP (high volume, low pressure) and handheld airless are the two main types of paint sprayer out there.

HVLP sprays paint out, and a lot of if, at a low pressure. This gives you a surprising amount of control and saves on paint wastage.

You can control the fan and flow of paint, so this is a good choice for furniture and small jobs where you came afford to overspray. With HVLPs, the paint is atomized into fine particles, which give an even, professional-looking finish.

Meanwhile, airless sprayers shoot paint out at a high pressure - this is good for big, outdoor jobs or wall-painting. The paint particles are larger here, so they cover surfaces more quickly. That said, they are not normally great for intricate work. The result can often look a little bit sloppy in comparison to a HVLP finish.

With all this being said, there are exceptions to the rules. I would normally suggest going for a HVLP sprayer for furniture-work, but our top pick is actually an airless sprayer! It goes to show that a little bit of research goes a long way, and that there's always room for surprises in the DIY world…

I have included spray guns for all budgets below, ranging from approximately $50 to $500 and consisting of both HVLP and airless options.

My Overall Rating

This is the newest addition to the Graco airless range and is really the perfect choice for you if you’re spraying cabinets. It has more features than any other electric handheld model on the market, which really comes in handy when you’re using different types of paint across drawers and kitchen cabinets.

This paint sprayer is powered by a Triax triple-piston pump, including stainless steel and carbide components. The 17M359 operates between 500-2000 PSI whilst still being durable and lightweight for an airless handheld spray gun. This is great news for any DIY newbies who are unsure of what they’re doing – without having to work hard, you’ll still get a lovely, even coverage across your kitchen cabinets.

It also offers an extensive tip range from .008 -.016, which is perfect for a variety of coatings and types of paint. These tips are provided because the Ultra Corded sprays primers, stains, water-based, latex, acrylics, enamels and more. This really is a multitasking tool, meaning you can use it across a variety of surfaces, such as kitchen cabinets, drawers and awkward corners of your home.

On-the-job replacement is another quality feature of this new spray system. By using a Philips head screwdriver, you can remove and replace the pump. Then simply reposition the door and add the screws to get painting again. This is great if, for some reason, it gets overly clogged or gets damaged. That said, it’s unlikely that your paint sprayer will clog and there’s a really simple fix if it does…

The RAC or ‘Reverse-A-Clean’ SwitchTips deliver excellent results when it comes to offering consistent coverage across kitchen cabinets. Cleaning clogged tips is easy to do with this system, and you can use the tips with your other Graco products for further versatility.

Best of all, 32 oz flex-liner bags are included, with larger options available for purchase. Again, this gives you great flexibility while you’re painting a range of surfaces, from drawers to kitchen cabinets. Maintenance is kept to a minimum, with this sprayer built to last!

All these reasons combined make this the best airless sprayer for cabinets and a firm favourite at number one!

My Overall Rating

The HomeRight Max Fine Finish Sprayer is our top pick for painting basic or small pieces of furniture. For under $100, this handheld sprayer offers excellent value for money and is an obvious choice for restoring any type of furniture. Whether you’re tackling a new kitchen cabinet or an older set of drawers that are in need of a refurb, this paint sprayer has you covered – or rather, the surfaces covered!

Different jobs require different spray patterns, and this machine allows for horizontal, vertical, and circular spraying. This will vastly improve your chances of a quality finish. The coverage this sprayer provides is nice and even, whatever type of paint you’re using! It minimizes overspray and helps you obtain a professional-looking result without having to put in lots of effort.

This product may be simple to operate, but there’s a lot going on behind its ergonomic frame. It’s really easy to use compared to other spray machines, which means you can relax into your painting job and enjoy yourself more. Its lightweight design makes holding it comfortable, rather than weighing you down like some of the bulkier machine can.

If you’re renovating your kitchen cabinets or other pieces of furniture, you’ll really appreciate the fact that this spray features adjustable controls. This means you can choose the level of coverage you’re getting while you work – perfect for anyone who’s new to paint sprayer or wants to go carefully while painting.

While it’s not a technical feature of this product, we love that you get a 2-year warranty with this product. Of course, maintenance should cover your back anyway, but it’s always nice to know that there’s additional support if you need it! On that note, we’d suggest thoroughly cleaning this paint sprayer after use – if paint is left in the machine, it will clog and will affect performance levels.

Take extra care when looking after this sprayer, as it’ll help sustain the lifetime of it and continue to deliver high-grade results each time. If you’re looking for a HVLP spray gun for cabinets and furniture, this will get the job done – and well!

This sprayer is available in 2 models, with the HomeRight C800766 Max Fine Finish Sprayer being the cheaper option. Despite being the pricier option of the two, this model has to be my favourite choice - and the best option of HVLP sprayers for cabinets.

This Wagner paint sprayer offers you painting versatility, with three spraying modes and multi-level trigger control. This means that you can choose how you spray depending on the job you’re tackling, whether it’s painting inside drawers, sprucing up your kitchen cabinets or repainting an interior wall.

Choose from a pattern within the range of 1 to 10 inches and enjoy even coverage with a variety of types of paint. This high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) sprayer is one of the best out there for heavier-duty work as well as more precise painting needs.

Choose from an indoor or outdoor setting, depending on the project you’re undertaking. We’d suggest using it for interior walls and furniture, such as kitchen cabinets, but it can be used outside for some jobs, too. One of the best features of this paint sprayer? It has ‘lock-and-go’ technology, meaning it’s really simple to clean once you’ve finished the job. This might not sound that important now, but, once you’ve completed a big task, you’ll be very grateful for this lack of maintenance!

If you fancy getting through a number of different jobs in one DIY session, you can swap the material over easily, changing from one type of paint to another. This saves you time in-between tasks, as there’s no heavy cleaning to do. It also saves your sanity, trust us! You’ll get the jobs themselves done more quickly, and spend less time messing around with cleaning fluids.

The air cap itself can be positioned in three different modes, letting you control how you paint for each job, from painting kitchen cabinets to restoring furniture. Choose from vertical, horizontal or circular patterns and marvel at the even coverage you get with each one.

All you need to do is to choose the mode that you think will help you do the paint job right and fast. And, with this machine, you’re pretty much guaranteed that! You’ll be thrilled with the professional-looking results and the ease with which you can achieve them.

This option is much cheaper than the Graco option and can be found for under $100. That doesn’t mean it compromises on performance though, don’t worry. You’re still getting a quality machine

Pros

  • thumbs-o-up
    Very affordable
  • thumbs-o-up

My Overall Rating

As I mentioned earlier, I'd normally suggest going for a HVLP when it comes to spraying cabinets. This is mainly due to the coverage and overall effect you’ll benefit from. This airless sprayer is the exception, however, and it's just too good to miss off my list. Swapping to airless can sometimes compromise the quality of the paintwork, but not with this machine!

This is about the highest price I’d suggest looking at before things get a bit obscene for no real reason. At a certain point, the level of performance you can get plateaus and you keep paying more without getting anything extra in return.

With this product, however, you're really getting your money's worth. The finish with this sprayer is incredible, especially for an airless product. This means it’s perfect for use on indoor furniture, such as when spray painting cabinets, tables and chairs. This sprayer can also be used for indoor walls, thanks to the coverage it offers.

The paint sprays at a consistent thickness-level, which is more important than it sounds. Some sprayers start to dwindle early on, and will start spraying paint very thinly, thus affecting the overall result.

With this product, you can expect an even finish! In terms of use, it’s a lightweight bit of kit, so you can use it for larger jobs without getting tired. This also means that it’s highly portable, although we would suggest using it indoors rather than for tackling big outside jobs.

Maintenance-wise, it’s really easy to look after. The clean-up is speedy and simple, so you’re not wasting lots of time after each job. Make sure you look after it and it will really last you a long time. If you need them, replacement tips are available. It’s important to look after the tips as they control the paint flow and can clog or block every so often.

Keeping these cleans maintains that professional finish we mentioned earlier. The only downside while using this paint sprayer is that you will need to refill it more often than with some other tools. This is because its intake is slightly lower than other sprayers, so, when using any types of paint, you’ll need to top it up every so often. It’s still definitely worth it though!

Pros

  • thumbs-o-up
    Light
  • thumbs-o-up
    Easy to use
  • thumbs-o-up
    Easy to clean
  • thumbs-o-up
    Portable

Cons

  • thumbs-o-down
    Requires frequent refilling
  • thumbs-o-down
    Not suitable for lacquer paint

With 500 watts of power behind this tool, you can enjoy a neat, precise paint finish with a variety of jobs. This paint sprayer comes with three different spray patterns – horizontal, vertical and circular, along with three different nozzles.

You can choose which size of nozzle you want for each job and change them easily. This puts you in total control of how you paint, letting you swap sizes from large wall jobs to a smaller DIY task, such as painting your kitchen cabinets.

You can use a variety of types of paint, too, from sealers and varnish to chalk-type paint and latex. Again, this means you can use just one tool for a huge range of jobs around your home, garden and workplace.

The Rexbeti also lets you choose the paint-flow while you work, so you can easily choose from high or low, fast or slow. This means you can alternate as you work inside, outside, on large areas or around small edges and awkward corners. Paint with confidence, knowing you’re going to get a professional-looking finish.

The machine itself is lightweight, so you can take on those bigger jobs without worrying about losing the feeling in your arms! It also comes with a 6.6ft-long power cord, so you can really roam free and get a lot done in go.

This sprayer will slot right into your hand while you work, ergonomic and easy to work with. You don’t need to worry about brush marks or overspray, as this tool is crafted for precision-painting and an even finish.

After you’ve completed your masterpiece, you can enjoy easy clean-up. The nozzle comes off nice and quickly, and everything cleans up well. Maintenance really is kept to a minimum, leaving you time to get on with enjoying your DIY session!

My Overall Rating

I love this for the finish it offers. This HVLP sprayer works hard to ensure even, fast coverage. This makes it a brilliant option for cabinets, as well as any other furniture around the home. Coverage seems pretty basic – you want everything covered, right? Actually, you want everything covered evenly. There’s a huge difference!

The precision-nozzle guarantees a clean, professional-looking finish on a variety of surfaces. You can use it for interior surfaces, such as walls, as well on outside walls or fences. It’s also fantastic for smaller items, like cabinets and furniture around your home. The nozzle works to direct the paint flow neatly, meaning you don’t need to worry about excessive overspray.

Play around with the paint flow levels to find something that suits your speed and style of painting. This will help minimise any paint wastage or overspray. All we’d say is to be careful when you first set the machine up each time – it can throw out chunks of paint, so we’d suggest aiming away from the surface you’re painting before getting properly started. This means you’ll be able to get that lovely even coverage we were talking about.

You can use a range of types of paint with this HVLP sprayer, helping you tackle a range of jobs. You can also choose from different patterns depending on what you’re painting and how you want it all to look. This sprayer is 20% lighter than its competitor's products, so you won't find your arm (and aim!) drooping after two minutes of painting. If you’re tackling jobs like painting interior walls, you’ll be really grateful for this!

Pros

  • thumbs-o-up
    Quick and Effortless
  • thumbs-o-up
Versatile – exterior, interior, and small projects
  • thumbs-o-up
Pattern Adjustment – horizontal, vertical, wide, or narrow
  • thumbs-o-up

Cons

  • thumbs-o-down

  • thumbs-o-down

My Overall Rating

This is a quirky little paint sprayer and is good for small jobs around the home, such as cabinet painting. You attach the gun to any container filled with paint - it suggests Mason jars, which are cheap and widely available - and it does the rest for you. I love this for its simplicity! You don’t need to buy regular-sized tubs of paint for those little jobs you want to get out of the way. This means you save money and don’t end up wasting two thirds of a large tin of paint when you’re just painting the doors or drawers of a cabinet.

This is a great budget option for anyone who wants to get a few odd jobs done. Depending on the size of the paint container, you may find yourself refilling it quite often. This is especially true with a Mason jars which are quite small, so this sprayer is better suited to small jobs. That said, it will offer great coverage and a precise finish, which really makes it worth the regular topping up.

Despite its low price, the Critter churns out paint efficiently and evenly. Some smaller pieces of kit can choke on the paint and clog everything up. This one runs smoothly and has an even uptake and spray. Again, this prevents overspray and paint wastage while ensuring you get a professional-looking finish.

It’s really easy to use, which is fantastic if you’re new to paint sprayer. You can use it with a range of types of paint, from later to lacquers, making it a great multitasker to have around your home. I love it for those speedy refurb jobs, like freshening up the shed walls, sprucing up the garden fence or revamping the cabinets in your kitchen.

Pros

  • thumbs-o-up
    Easy to use
  • thumbs-o-up
    Great for beginners
  • thumbs-o-up
    Cheap
  • thumbs-o-up
Suitable for latex paints, lacquers, stains

You'll need an air compressor to run this with, but it's super easy to use from then onwards. Don’t be put off by its low price-point – the quality is still fantastic, it’s just allowing for the money spent on the compressor. You’ll still be getting a professional-looking finish, don’t worry!

For those new to HVLPs and wanting to come in with a low-cost one, this is the perfect model for you. HVLPs essentially work to atomise the paint into fine, small particles. This means that, when sprayed out under a lot of pressure, a lot of paint particles come out at once.

This means that you get a nice, even coverage across different surfaces. Whether you’re painting your kitchen cabinets or tackling a large interior wall, this machine is ready to go.

The sprayer works to minimise paint wastage, which is good news if you’re new to paint spraying and want to get the hang of things. Forget about excessive overspray, as this tool works to spray precisely.

You can also choose what height and width you want to work out, which means you can easily swap between wide walls and smaller, more detailed cabinets and furniture, all with the same tool. This leads to much more efficient cleaning, as you don’t need to swap between sprayers as you go through your DIY to-do list.

We love that this HVLP sprayer also features anti-spill technology. That means you can hold the machine at any angle without worrying about paint falling out. This saves you so much time in terms of clean-up and gives you further flexibility and versatility while you’re painting.

Get into those tricky corners more easily without worrying about accidentally spilling paint everywhere. If you’re painting your garden shed, inside drawers or across your kitchen cabinets, you’ll be free to move with confidence while you work thanks to this innovation.

Pros

  • thumbs-o-up
Can adjust the width/height and the amount of paint
  • thumbs-o-up
    Runs well on any surface
  • thumbs-o-up
    Increased productivity
  • thumbs-o-up
    With 1 year warranty
  • thumbs-o-up
Great touch on ceiling even under critical lighting

Cons

  • thumbs-o-down
Air pressure bolt may get loose so there would be frequent adjustment on this
  • thumbs-o-down

Fancy achieving a flawless finish in a fraction of the time it would take you with a paintbrush? This VonHaus sprayer works really well with varnishes, primers, stains, paints and more. It offers that polished, professional look without requiring you to slave away with a paintbrush (or pay a handyman).

In terms of use, you’ll find this machine really nice and straightforward to use. The nozzle adjusts quickly and easily, giving you a choice of gentle or strong paint-flow.

You can choose from three spray patterns, opting for a horizontal, vertical or nummular finish. This gives you a good range of versatility when it comes to painting different surfaces, whether you’re going for a wall, kitchen cabinets or other pieces of furniture.

You’ll find yourself wanting to refill the sprayer out of habit, rather than need! This sprayer holds 35-ounces of paint, which is pretty impressive! Don’t worry about the weight, as the machine itself is lovely and lightweight at just 4 pounds, giving you that level of portability while you work.

Once you’re finished, you can quickly move on, with simple disassembly. You won’t be slowed down by awkward cleaning tasks either, as it’s easy to maintain, even for beginners.

This unit doesn’t just come with the sprayer, you’ll also get to enjoy a range of compatible accessories. You’ll get a measuring cup (perfect for more precise jobs), pipe cleaner (ideal for easy maintenance) and nozzle needle (great for deep-cleaning and sustaining precision-performance).

Pros

  • Creates a flawless finish
  • Cuts painting time dramatically
  • Can be used with many materials
  • thumbs-o-up

My Overall Rating

There aren’t many paint sprayers that perform like a Graco. Because of this, you can expect to pay a premium price, but they are worth every penny. With this brand, you know that you’re getting a high-end product packed with great tech and features to make life easier.

For one, this pain sprayer has variable speed control – that means you can choose what rate you work out. This means you can direct paint slowly if you’re new to things, or you can work at a higher speed if you need to get a big job done quickly. For things like furniture and kitchen cabinets, we’d suggest working at a slower speed to get that level of precision you’ll be after. Of course, once you’re used to this sprayer, you can work at a higher pace!

With the stainless-steel piston pump, you can spray un-thinned materials with ease, choosing from a range of paints to work with. In addition, the VacuValve technology allows you to spray in any direction, even upside down. We have to say, if you’re spraying upside down, please be careful! This is a great feature for trickier jobs, like inside the garden shed or in tight corners.

In terms of maintenance, the sprayer comes with a FlexLiner bag that replaces cups, meaning you can choose whether you reuse them or recycle them. As with most sprayers, this machine has a reversible spray tip – that means you can unclog it if paint gets backed up.

In fact, you get two of these reversible spray tips, meaning you can work uninterrupted should something happen. You’ll also get a durable storage case which protects the sprayer and accessories while you’re not using them. You’ll also get to enjoy four of the magic FlexLiner bags that we mentioned, putting you in control of how you work.

The downside to this sprayer is that it isn’t really designed for ongoing, professional use. It has an annual-use recommendation of up to 25 gallons per year, which is the suggested maximum usage before performance starts to be compromised. For most DIYers, this should be plenty!

Pros

  • Variable speed control
  • Durable storage case
  • Durable stainless steel piston pump
  • thumbs-o-up
    Sprays a multitude of materials
  • thumbs-o-up
    Comes with FlexLiner bags

Cons

  • Not intended for professional usage

My Overall Rating

This product had to make my list and it's not hard to see why. This HVLP sprayer is all about adaptability. You can alter the fan, flow and pattern of your paint. This is a lot more important than it sounds, and is an added bonus to an already-great product.

This sprayer gives you the ultimate control over what you're doing, which is perfect when you're tackling a delicate and small job such as cabinets. It's extremely easy to take this around with you and is fully-portable, so is a DIY multi-tasker.

I love how easy it is to clean, too - everything comes apart so you can ensure there's no leftover paint inside it that may cause damage. It's a total bargain for the quality you're getting.

Price Guide: How Much Should You Spend?

As with many things in life, more expensive doesn’t always mean better quality. With paint sprayers, there a bit of a 'price window'…

Anything from around $30-100 is a good place to start if you're new to the game. The products in this price range will do the job for you nicely. Some cheaper products often choke or clog up with paint, which ruins your flow as well as the finish. They are decent enough to use for one or two odd jobs, but are definitely not a 'forever buy'.

Lucky for you, I've found some fantastic options within this price range that won't break the bank, or themselves! While many cheaper sprayers will struggle, I've searched high and low to find budget options that still work hard and give a great end result.

Mid-range products are where you'll want to be if you're after something to add to your garage shelf for years to come. Something around $300-500 is a good range to look in if you're serious about getting a high quality product.

Anything that creeps towards the four-figure mark is unnecessary, in my opinion -  there is only so much added quality that comes with the added price. Essentially, you end up paying for the brand and not much else.

User Guide: How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets Like a Pro!

So you’ve got your kit sorted but want to make sure your technique is up to scratch? No worries, we've got you covered…

First things first, cover up anything you don’t want to get paint on. Sounds pretty basic, but I know that I often skip the prep and rush into the fun stuff.Use old sheets and tape to ensure you're only spraying what you want to be painted.

Now for actually painting. This can take a few tries to get right, so stay focused and keep going!

Depending on what product you've gone for, you'll want to be a certain distance from the surface you're painting. This will be between around 8 and 12 inches away, give or take, and should be specified in the product manual.

In terms of speed, experiment on an old piece of wood or wall that nobody will see. If you're too eager, you risk missing out patches and will end up with a very uneven finish. Too slow, and you risk the paint dripping and adding unwanted texture to the surface, as well as wasting it.

Keep your arm straight and maintain the same distance from the surface at all times. Don't start twisting your arms around! This will alter the distance between the sprayer and surface, and may result in uneven layers of paint. You can mover around more to reach underneath or into corners, but for flat surfaces, keep your arms in the same position.

Look after your new friend - paint can dry very easily inside the sprayer, which will massively affect its efficiency. Most products will offer guidance on the best way to clean it - either by using a cleaning fluid or some other chemicals to ensure the machine is nice and paint-free. Sounds like a hassle, but it's an important part of DIY.
