About the Graco Brand
Graco is the parent company over many smaller companies including Magnum, Airlessco, QED Environmental Systems, Sharpe and Advanjet. They’ve been a leader in the paint sprayer industry for many years.
Many painting contractors, handymen, DIY-ers and homeowners have come to rely on their unmatched quality and premium performance.
They are best known for the extensive line of airless paint sprayers. Offering a wide variety of sizes and models, there is a unit that will work for anyone’s needs.
Some of their products include battery-powered airless sprayers, mechanical airless sprayers, light-duty electric airless sprayers, professional-grade electric airless sprayers and more.
Quality Features of This Sprayer
Let’s take a peek at some of the best features of this sprayer.
There are two frame options with the Graco 390 sprayer. You can use the stand style which weighs in at 30 pounds and provides a stable base. In addition, it is made from chromed steel, offers a 4-leg design and a cord wrap. The convenient carrying handle makes it easy to transport the sprayer wherever you go.
The HiBoy frame also weighs in a just 30 pounds, but it features handy tires to make transportation even easier. It is similar to the stand in that it is made from chromed steel and offers the cord wrap.
The setup on this machine will require a little more effort than your typical household paint sprayer. That is understandable considering that it is a higher end model designed for professional use. Even still, the set up is easy to understand and directions are supplied to help you through the process.
Pump Replacement System
To help extend the life of the machine, Graco offers the Pump Replacement System. There is no longer any reason to wait for the pump to be replaced when this process only involves three easy steps.
The replacement can be performed in a minute’s time. This is quite convenient when it comes to replacements. You don’t have to wait any more time when replacing your pump unlike with other tools of the same kind. This model also makes available the Endurance Now program.
In addition to the easy pump replacement, the Graco 390 also features Pump Endurance. The Endurance Pump features a hardened stainless steel cylinder, long-life V-Max packings and Chromex rod. In addition, the QuikAccess intake valve makes it simple to clean or clear debris. The pump offers a life that lasts twice as long as many other brands.
The pump filter design is unique and assists in eliminating spills. The filter is set in a way that prevents the material from collapsing during the process of painting surfaces. The large 7.8 square-inch filtering area also helps to lessen tip clogs to keep you running smoothly.
Part of the reason that this unit is considered to be for professionals is that of the high-end pressure adjustments offered. With simple setting changes, it is easy to spray light or heavy materials in a pattern that you wish.
This unit can easily spray most enamels, stains, oil-based paints, latex paints and lacquers. Practicing with all these settings prior to taking on a new project is always advised. This will help you complete the best finish possible.
For easier painting, you can use the long suction hose. This allows you to paint directly from a 1 or 5-gallon paint container. This saves time over the models where you have to fill the paint container on the unit directly. Every time that container empties, it has to be re-filled which takes up time.
Thankfully, with this unit, you can just switch to a new paint container when you need more material.
Cleanup is easy considering you don’t need to dirty a paint container for operation. Simply use the same suction tube to clean the unit with the appropriate material. Use water for cleaning when you have sprayed water-based paints and mineral spirits when spraying oil-based materials.
One of the best things about purchasing from Graco is that there is a nice variety of accessories that can be purchased to make your jobs even easier. For example, you can purchase tip extensions to make reaching further.
In addition, when you are ready to store your Graco sprayer, you’ll want to use the specially formulated Pump Armor for protection.
What about Negative Aspects
While the Graco brand offers some of the best airless paint sprayers on the market, there are always things that could be done better. I have trouble finding much wrong with this unit, to be honest, but if I had to pick some issues, they would be minor.
First, the Graco 390 Airless sprayer is more expensive than some other models. This will require the user to determine if the brand name, support and quality of goods is worth the extra money. Generally, I find that purchasing a Graco sprayer is always worth spending a little more on.
If the price is too high and you feel that it is too much machine for you, it would make sense to go down a few models to something less expensive. In that case, you could opt for the Graco Magnum ProX17 instead.
In addition, this particular model is currently discontinued by the manufacturer. This means that to purchase this model, you would have to rely on third-party sellers. I will be discussing where you can purchase this unit later on in the article in depth. If you are having trouble finding it, you might want to opt for the Graco Ultra 395 PC instead.
Who Can Operate This Sprayer?
What is This Graco Model Made for Spraying?
The Graco 390 has many talents and ways to help you perform your jobs easier. Here are some of the projects that you can use the sprayer for.
This airless sprayer is designed to complete interior walls with ease. This is especially true of new construction before any furniture gets moved in. The unit features 50-feet of hose and that can be extended up to 300 feet if needed.
In addition, the lighter weight allows you to move around the room easily. If you have items in the room you are painting, be sure to properly cover everything to reduce damage from overspray.
Working outdoors is what this sprayer was designed for. It completes jobs in far less time than using a brush or paint roller.
The Graco 390 can pump materials at 0.47-gallons per minute so the project will be completed in no time.
It also cuts downtime that you can pull the materials directly from a 1 or 5-gallon container.
Finally, the unit comes with a 50-foot hose, but you can extend that out to 300 feet if needed.
The lower weight of the Graco 390 makes this unit ideal for painting fences. You can also use it to pump most acrylic or latex paints and stains with ease.
With 0.47-gallons of material being sprayed per minute, imagine how quickly your fence will be completed. Skip the paintbrush or roller and opt for a sprayer instead.
A deck is much like a fence with the materials and procedures that will be used. Considering the Graco 390 can be used with up to 300-feet of hose, this is the ideal solution to completing the deck jobs. Spray a variety of materials with ease and don’t waste time brushing or rolling the stain on.
One of the first things that people will see pulling into a house is the garage door. If it is old looking and drab, it is going to set the entire impression for the house. Easily touch up your garage door by applying a fresh paint job.
With the right airless sprayer, this will take a fraction of the time. In addition, setup and cleanup will be a breeze.
Instead of hiring someone to do the job every time a property needs minor repairs or touch up work, use your own paint sprayer. This will save you money and time as well as give you control over the desired outcome. The airless paint sprayer will pay for itself in just a few jobs.
If you are a professional contractor, you can get the jobs done in a fraction of the time by using the Graco 390. That is due in part to the ability to spray 0.47-gallons per minute. It also has a lot to do with the fact that you can spray directly from a 1 or 5-gallon paint container.
Graco’s Pump Replacement System also makes it easy to keep working despite the need to switch out pumps.
What Shouldn’t It Be Used For
By now you know that I feel strongly that Graco makes some of the best airless paint sprayers on the market. There are still some projects that this model will not be suited towards.
Airless sprayers, in general, are not the best option for spraying vehicles. Many airless paint sprayers suffer from overspray issues which is less than ideal when going for a detailed job on an automobile.
Using an airless sprayer to do the vehicle’s paint job will require more preparation and will produce more mess.
An HVLP paint sprayer is much better suited toward these jobs. They offer multiple gun options to customize the finish. They also offer detail work guns for the tiny crevices and cracks that need to be painted. Furniture & Cabinets
In the same way that an airless sprayer won’t be best on vehicles, it isn’t going to suit cabinet or furniture painting either. Again, this goes back to the issues with overspray and the need to spend more time preparing.
Using an HVLP sprayer is the best option for painting your household furniture or cabinets. They are equipped to properly handle the detail aspects with ease. In addition, the HVLP sprayers are quieter so they are suited for indoor work.
An HVLP paint sprayer will get the job done quicker than with a roller or brush. If you need help determining the right model for your task, read our HVLP Paint Sprayer Reviews.
Graco Magnum 390 Compared With These Sprayers
The Graco Magnum 390 paint sprayer isn’t going to be for everyone. Let’s take a look at a few other options and see how they compare.
vs Graco 395
The Graco 395 is a step up from the Magnum 390. It offers the same 3300 PSI but has a 7/8-horsepower motor instead of the 5/8-horsepower the 390 offers.
This additional power makes it capable of spraying 0.54-gallons of material per minute which is higher than the 390.
You can also use a maximum tip size of 0.023 instead of the 0.021 of the Magnum 390. The Graco 395 is also on a stand for easy maneuverability but it does weigh about 42 pounds which is a pretty big difference from the 30 pound Graco Magnum 390.
The 395 features some of the same equipment like the ProConnect System, the Pump Replacement System and the Endurance Pump. In addition, it offers the SmartControl 1.0 which delivers a consistent spray pattern. It also features Advantage Drive hardened steel gears which are quieter.
If you decide to upgrade to this model instead, keep in mind that you will be spending about $150 more. You need to weigh the additional features and decide if it is worth that much of a price increase to you.
vs Graco Magnum X5
The Graco Magnum X5 is sort of like the 390 on a much smaller scale. In fact, it is geared toward home users instead of professionals.
If you know a DIYer, this would be the perfect model for them. With that in mind, it isn’t powerful or equipped enough to handle the ongoing abuse of professional paint jobs.
It features a ½-horsepower motor that produces 2800 PSI and can spray 0.24-gallons per minute. It also has a stainless steel piston pump to spray unthinned materials at high pressure. While it features the Flexible Suction Tube, it doesn’t have the Pump Replacement System or the Endurance Pump.
It is also only recommended for up to 125 gallons of usage per year. Instead of supporting a 300-foot hose, the Graco Magnum X5 can only support 75 feet. It also only supports up to a 0.015 tip size making it geared to much smaller projects.
The bright side is that this unit costs over $500 less and only weighs 13 pounds. It might make for a good backup option for when you have just a small project to complete.
vs Titan Impact 440
Another well-known brand in professional spraying is Titan. The Titan Impact 440 is a comparable model which features a 7/8-horsepower motor. It can produce 3300 PSI and is capable of spraying 0.54-gallons per minute.
The unit weighs 35 pounds when purchased on the skid frame and 59 pounds when used on the high rider frame. Just like Graco, Titan offers a wide range of accessories to add on.
The Titan sprayer includes an LX-80II Spray Gun, TR1 tip and a 50-foot hose. It is designed to spray up to 100 gallons per week and features the AutoOiler which lubricated the packings with a simple button push.
The Titan sprayer also features Electronic Pressure Control and Rapid Clean. For a more detailed review of what the Titan 440 offers, be sure to read our complete review. Both the Titan 440 and Graco Magnum 395 feature about the same price.
vs Graco 17G180 Magnum ProX19 Cart Paint Sprayer
The Magnum ProX19 sprayer is a slight step down in ability from the Magnum 390. For $200 less, you’ll receive a 7/8-horsepower motor that produces 3000 PSI and can spray up to 0.38-gallons per minute. It will only support up to a 0.019 tip size and 150-foot hose.
Despite the differences, there are some things the two sprayers have in common. They both contain a Pump Replacement System, feature adjustable pressures and offer the flexible suction tube for easy painting from a 1 or 5-gallon bucket.
In addition, both Graco models have been rated highly by customers as most of their products are. Keep in mind that the Graco Magnum ProX19 only has an annual recommended usage of 500 gallons. This model would work for both the professional or home user that wants to complete their own projects. Set Up & Prepping a Graco 390 for Spray Painting
Setup of your Graco Magnum 390 couldn’t be easier. Once you have everything prepped for painting and you are ready to begin, you will need to follow a few simple steps to have your sprayer ready to go.
When the initial setup and cleaning cycle are complete, you can then adjust your settings, pressures, and controls to their required settings and begin painting.
How to Clean Up & Store a Graco 390 Sprayer
Cleaning the sprayer and getting it ready for storage is slightly more complicated than the initial setup and use of the sprayer. However, cleaning needs to be done after every use of the system, and long-term storage care should be taken so that the Magnum 390 performs to expectations when you pull it out of storage for use once again.
Depending on the type of paint you used, the cleaning cycle will be a little different. Mainly in the solution used to flush the system. For oil-based paints, you will want to use mineral spirits or a mix of water and mineral spirits. For water-based paints, you can use warm water or a water and detergent mix.
You will want to run the solution through the system as if you were painting. Instead of spraying a wall, though, spray into a waste bucket. When the solution runs clear, the interior of the sprayer is cleaned.
From there, you will want to remove the power supply and the air hose and disassemble the gun. All pieces need to be hand cleaned after being soaked in the cleaning solution. Using a pipe cleaner or small scraper, you can get the air cap, nozzle, and tips cleaned. Wipe down the entire nit and reassemble.
If you plan to store the sprayer, use Pump Armor by siphoning it into the system. Shut down the system and store away, covered in your garage, tool shed or closet until next season.
Where Can You Buy This Sprayer At Its Best Price?
As we discussed earlier in the article, this paint sprayer is actually discontinued by the manufacturer. That makes it difficult to find any competition in pricing between retailers.
Thankfully, Amazon still carries the Graco Magnum 390 sold by third-party retailers. Generally, the price on the stand style is normally around $850 while the HiBoy is about $150 more.
The nice thing about purchasing from a third party retailer from Amazon is that you are still backed by Amazon’s reputation. You can receive quick shipping and the best price possible when purchasing from Amazon.
If you choose to go with another retailer like eBay to get the sprayer from a third party, you don’t have the same protections.
