About The Graco Brand
Graco has been a leader in paint sprayers and is a favorite among painting contractors, homeowners, do-it-yourselfers and handymen. Each Graco sprayer offers unmatched quality and allows the optimum amount of productivity.
Graco’s most popular product line includes the airless sprayers. With that category, there are many models and sizes to choose from; something to fit all needs.
They offer gas mechanical airless sprayers, battery-powered airless sprayers, light-duty electric airless sprayers, professional-grade electric airless sprayers and more.
Graco also owns several other brands which are worth noting that include Advanjet, Magnum, Airlessco, QED Environmental Systems and Sharpe.
Quality Features Of This Sprayer
The Graco Magnum X5 has many features that make this the sprayer to own. Here are a few reasons you need to consider this model for your next purchase.
The Magnum X5 comes with a reliable stand that ensures this unit stays in place during operation. In addition, there is a handle for the easiest transport. In comparison to numerous other models, the compact frame size of this unit also offers easy storage since it doesn’t take up much room.
Considering this model is geared to the homeowner or light-duty contractor, the manufacturer wanted to ensure that it didn’t take much work to get started. With a few simple steps, the beginner user can be painting in no time.
Just take a few minutes to practice spraying on some scrap wood or cardboard until you get the hang of the feel.
To purchase a quality paint sprayer, you need to know that the parts are going to stand up to the job. The durable, stainless steel piston pump of the Graco X5 allows spraying of unthinned materials at high pressure.
In addition, it is going to withstand years of use without breaking. The durability of the pump also allows you to use the unit more often than a typical budget model.
Part of the hassle of using a paint sprayer is the need to fill the containers. With this Graco model, that is no longer an issue. The flexible suction tube allows you to pump materials directly from your 1 or 5-gallon paint buckets. That also means an easier cleanup.
RAC Spray Tip
As with many of the Graco paint sprayers, you received the SG2 gun which features a reversible tip. The 515 RAC Spray Tip is ideal when working with medium thickness materials and allows for a pattern size between 10 to 12 inches.
The best part about the reversible tip is that if you end up with a clog, you can simply turn the tip around and blow it right out. There is also a filter in this handle to reduce the chance of clogging.
No matter what level of paint spraying you are accustomed to, this Graco model offers easy to adjust pressure control. The knob is located next to the intake tube for easy access. With a max output of 3000 PSI, you can choose “low spray”, “hi spray” or anything in between.
Even as a beginner, you’ll find that the controls are easy to get used to with a little practice.
The Power Flush adapter is what sets the Graco Magnum X5 apart from the rest. You simply attach it to the garden hose and flush the system. Using a soapy liquid is ideal for cleaning the pump, hose and gun.
Using this sprayer not only means getting the painting done quickly, but also the clean up afterward. It’s a good thing because the last thing you want to do is spend additional time cleaning when the job is done.
The nice thing about purchasing this Graco model is that there are several handy accessories that can be added on later. Consider, for example, the 50-foot Airless hose. This is a great option to purchase later if you find yourself needing more length to reach projects.
There is also a tip extension for reaching places like recessed ceilings, stairwells or areas that require the use of a ladder. You can also use the Pump Armor when you are preparing to protect the unit for storage.
What About the Negative Aspects
None of the paint sprayers on the market are perfect. While the Graco Magnum X5 seems to come pretty close, there are some negative aspects that are important to note.
Considering this model comes with a low price tag, there are some issues to consider in quality.
The first thing we noticed was that there are times that the sprayer will clog when using thicker materials.
Thankfully, the RAC tip makes it simple to unclog and get back to work.
At just 13 pounds, the unit does experience some slight vibrations when working at higher PSI. While it moves around slightly, the stand is plenty sturdy and offers substantial support.
Overspray has been commented about by customers and can sometimes cause issues. This is common with many sprayers, so it is an uncommon concern. To avoid this, take the time to run a few trial runs. In addition, you should also avoid spraying on windy days when doing exterior work.
When you are painting indoors, take the time to mask everything properly and the overspray will not be a concern.
The final downside is that the Graco Magnum X5 is only geared to smaller or medium-sized projects. At a recommended annual usage of 125 gallons, this isn’t particularly designed to be used daily. For something geared toward a professional or contractor use, you might want to consider a sprayer in the Professional line instead. Two models to consider would be the ProX17 or ProX19.
Who Can Operate This Sprayer?
What is This Graco Model Made For Spraying?
The Graco Magnum X5 is ideal for numerous projects. Here are some of the most popular reasons customers choose this sprayer.
With the maximum hose length of 75 feet, this airless sprayer offers excellent quality for an affordable price.
It can apply light stains to heavy latex paints with ease. In addition, the light weight allows for a quick application when working with interior walls.
Ideally, you’ll want to use this sprayer before moving furniture in or when everything is properly covered as this Graco model can offer a little overspray.
For a lot of the same reasons that painting interior walls is a good idea, you’ll find positive aspects to using this model for your ceilings.
Using that tip extension I told you about earlier will make the job even easier for you.
Again, for the best chance of success, you will either want to paint with nothing else present in the room or make sure you take the time to cover all the furniture.
Exterior work is where an airless sprayer excels. It takes far less time to use a high-performance sprayer than attempt to brush or roll on paint.
The Graco Magnum X5 can pump materials at 0.27-gallons per minute, so you will be done with the exterior of your home in no time.
In addition, the fact that you can pull the paint directly from the can also cuts down on painting time.
Because the Graco Magnum X5 is lightweight and portable, it is a great option for completing the fence quickly. In addition, the Graco pumps stains or most acrylic paints with ease. If you are using latex paints, you’ll want to be sure that you properly thin the materials before painting.
With the maximum hose size of 75-feet and the ability to spray a variety of materials, the Graco Magnum X5 is ideal for those pesky deck jobs. When you are ready to stain the deck, use this tool to get the job done quickly. You no longer have to spend the time rolling or brushing the stain on, just grab this handy sprayer and get the job done.
Using the Magnum X5 to paint a door makes this tedious task much simpler. Whether you are painting the exterior of a door or interior, you’ll find that the easy setup, quick spray and painless cleanup make this small job go quickly.
If you aren’t able to remove the door for painting, make sure that everything around it gets properly masked off before spraying.
What Shouldn’t It Be Used For
While it might seem like a good idea to go around spray painting every project you have, there are some tasks you might not want to use this for.
A modern HVLP paint sprayer is a far better option when looking to apply paint to a vehicle. That’s due in part to the lower instances of overspray. There will be less preparation needed and less mess at the end.
HVLP paint sprayers are available with multiple gun options to help you customize the paint job perfectly.
For more detail, choose a model that offers detail work on top of a standard gun. Being able to change out the paint tip size will also be an important part of choosing a quality sprayer.
For more ideas on which spray gun to choose for this job, read our post about the Best Paint Sprayer for Cars.
Furniture & Cabinets
Airless sprayers are generally geared toward exterior projects or larger surfaces. That is due in part to the amount of overspray that is experienced during operation.
An HVLP paint sprayer is going to be the best choice when dealing with furniture or cabinets. That’s because they will handle the detail work that is required with ease. HVLP sprayers are also quieter which makes them ideal for indoor use.
Use an HVLP paint sprayer to accomplish an even finish without the use of brushes or rollers. We have a post on HVLP Paint Sprayer Reviews if you need help picking the right model.
Graco Magnum x5 Compared With These Sprayers
Sometimes the Graco Magnum X5 isn’t the best option for you. Let’s take a look at some other models to see how they compare.
Graco Magnum X5 vs Graco Magnum X7
The similarities between these two machines are numerous. First, they both spray at 3000 PSI and they have a recommended annual usage of 125 gallons. They both also contain the metal spray gun and cannot spray hot solvents.
There are a few areas where the X7 outranks the X5. One of these is with the horsepower as the X7 features 5/8 horsepower versus the ½ horsepower motor of the X5.
In addition, you can use a maximum tip size of 0.017 and a maximum hose length of 100-feet which are both upgrades.
Because of the additional power, you can expect the X7 to spray at 0.31-gallons per minute which is slightly more than the X5. You will, however, add about 10 pounds in weight and pay about $70 more in price.
If it is important to you to have a longer hose or to spray a little fast, then the upgrade would be worth the extra cost.
Graco Magnum X5 vs Graco Project Painter Plus
If you feel the Magnum X5 might be too professional for your sporadic usage, you might want to look at a lower model, the Graco Project Painter Plus.
It only has a recommended annual usage of 50 gallons, so it is quite a step-down. This would be geared toward someone who has a few projects a year that they want to accomplish.
You are also stepping down with a 3/8 horsepower motor and 2800 PSI. You also won’t be able to use more than a 50-foot hose to complete your projects.
The Project Painter Plus will still produce 0.24-gallons per minute of materials, so the job will still get done quickly.
In addition, it is a lightweight model at just 10 pounds, so it is portable and convenient to take anywhere. You would be looking at about an $80 savings to go with this model over the X5.
If you feel that you may use your paint sprayer more often than a few times a year, this model might not be the best fit. At that point, I’d have to recommend spending the extra on the X5 instead.
Graco Magnum X5 vs Titan ControlMax 1700 Pro
For slightly more money than the Magnum X5, you can upgrade to this professional model and achieve some big upgrades.
The ControlMax 1700 Pro offers 0.60-horsepower and pumps at 0.33-gallons per minute. While only operating at 1500 PSI, you can use a maximum tip size of 0.017 and a hose of 100 feet.
In addition, it has a recommended annual usage of 300 gallons, so it could be used on a regular basis with no issue.
There are several downsides to this upgrade. First, the reviews on the ControlMax aren’t nearly as strong as with the Graco. The second concern is that the unit itself is much larger. In fact, you can’t easily store the ControlMax. On top of that, it weighs almost 40 pounds.
Yes, the unit comes with wheels to make it easier to move, but it just isn’t quite as portable as the Graco Magnum X5. If you need a sprayer to paint on a professional level, I would be more apt to recommend the Graco Magnum ProX17.
Graco Magnum X5 vs Titan XT250
When looking at comparable models, you’ll notice that these two sprayers are in the same price range, but they vary widely in customer reviews.
While the Graco continues to be a bestselling item with high marks from users, the Titan model doesn’t have much of a reputation.
With that being said, the Titan does offer a rugged stand mount and carrying handle like the Graco. It can pump at 2500 PSI with the ½-horsepower motor and can produce 0.25-gallons per minute.
It also features a reversible 0.015 spray tip and will work with most medium thickness materials such as acrylic, stains, varnishes or latex.
You are going to pay a few dollars more to purchase the Titan, so in my opinion, it’s a no-brainer to choose the Graco instead. You are backed by the reputation of the brand, the reviews of hundreds of customers and the knowledge of knowing that Graco products are made to last.
Graco Magnum X5 vs HomeRight Power Flo-Pro
The HomeRight model is probably the most comparable to the Magnum X5 that I could find. The price is slightly lower, but so are the customer reviews.
Other than that, they are two very similar machines. The HomeRight offers a ½-horsepower motor that produces 2800 PSI.
In addition, it features a stand similar with weight and stability as the Graco. You can spray 0.24-gallons per minute with the HomeRight. It also comes with a 515 reversible tip for getting rid of clogs quickly.
While you will be paying less for this machine and you’ll receive many of the same qualities, you won’t have access to the same number of accessories that the Graco brand offers. In addition, you won’t have access to the same customer support and service that a customer is used to receiving from a larger company such as Graco.
You also won’t have access to the convenience of the Power Flush Adaptor for easy cleanup or ability to spray from the paint can directly.
Graco X5 Recommended Spraying Tips/Nozzles Explained
Graco makes three different tips for your sprayers. You can choose from TrueAirless, TC Pro, and TrueCoat 360.
The TrueAirless are the most used tips and come in 16 different sizes. Everything from DIY home jobs to professional contractor projects can take advantage of the TrueAirless tips. You must use a TrueAirless tip guard with these tips, though, so if you make a purchase, make sure you also get the right tip guard.
The TC Pro tips come in 11 sizes and will only work in TC Pro guns. Like the True Airless, they are reversible for easy clog clearance and can atomize a wide variety of paint types and thicknesses.
The TrueCoat 360 tips come in only two sizes, each with a different fan width. The smaller tip will spray a 4-inch fan while the larger tip sprays a 12-inch fan.
All Graco tips are stamped with a 3-digit size code. The first number is the fan width (when multiplied by 2), and the last two numbers are the orifice opening size (measured in thousandths of an inch).
Graco also offers a tip size selection guide to help you find the perfect tip for your sprayer and project.
How do I Clean a Graco Magnum X5 Paint Sprayer
The Magnum X5 is fairly simple to keep clean. There are a lot of steps, which can seem overwhelming, but each one is fairly quick and simple to complete. Your owner’s manual will have a detailed outline for cleaning methods, of which there are a few. You can do a thorough clean or a quick-flush.
However, the type of paint used in the system will determine which method of cleaning you use. For example, only water-based paints can use the quick-flush method. Also, if you are using oil-based paints, you will need to use mineral spirits in your cleaning solution, and waster-based paints use water only.
For a brief example of what you will be going through for a cleaning process, I will outline the cleaning steps for cleaning the Magnum X5 after using water-based paint and utilizing the quick-flush method.
You can get other cleaning methods and more details through this video about cleaning the Magnum spray guns and system.
How can I Store Graco X5 to help it last longer?
If you plan to store the Graco Magnum X5 for extended periods, you must first complete a thorough cleaning cycle.
Ensure that all components are dry, reassembled, and ready to go back to work. Before you can store the unit, you will need to add a winterizer fluid to the system. Graco recommends Pump Armor to keep the system lubed, and the seals and o-rings from drying out.
Follow any of the cleaning procedures and then fill the system with the Pump Armor according to the directions. Once the fluid is in the system, shut it down and unplug the sprayer. Form there, storage should be a dry, climate-controlled area, such as your garage or a closet.
You will also want to cover the system to prevent debris and dirt from getting into the system and to eliminate the dust build-up.
When you are ready to use the sprayer again, you will need to flush the Pump Armor out before resuming your painting projects.
Where Can You Buy This Sprayer At Its Best Price?
If you are ready to purchase the Graco Magnum X5, the next logical question to ask is, “Where can I find this the cheapest?” I’ve done research over a period of time and found that one of the best places to purchase this unit is through Amazon. It typically runs right around $300, although there have been sporadic deals during certain times.
Sometimes it can be found at Home Depot for the around the same price. The difference will be the availability of customer service when dealing with Amazon as they are a much larger company.
You could also choose to purchase the Graco Magnum X5 through Graco themselves, but you are going to pay about $20 more. I also am not sure how long it takes them to ship the items, so you could be waiting slightly longer.
In my opinion, it is easiest to purchase from Amazon. They offer superior customer support and with your Prime membership, you’ll have the paint sprayer within two days. Having the Graco delivered to your house for the lowest price seems like the best option to me.

Bought this sprayer to paint our entire new construction house. Instructions were easy to follow and the laminated quick set-up/use/cleaning instruction booklet is great to have on hand. Also comes with an instruction DVD that gives good pointers for set-up, spraying and cleaning. Hard to believe this thing isn't considered to be a pro level sprayer. The positive pressure pump kept the pressure up all the way through the job.
